Best Place To Buy Notebooks In Manhattan.

I've been on the hunt for some time for a new brand notebook. Since I will be in New York I thought I would ask if anyone here knows who has a good selection. I've seen all the comments and recommendations but hate to order online never having even seen it. Any suggestions? Doesn't have to be FP friendly. Thanks in advance.

I am not a paper guy, but I think you owe yourself a trip to Fountain Pen Hospital in lower Manhattan. One of the great pen stores left.

Try here ...

They have a good assortment, various styles.

I use their grid notebooks with fb's and have

had no issues with almost every pen and ink

combo that I have used.

Last time I was in NY (september last year) I found some neat ones at Barnes & Noble. Some other bookstores had journals (Strand comes to mind) but those were mainly Moleskine, IIRC. B&N had lots of other journals, and sketchbooks, all of which turned out to be pretty decent quality v.a.v. fountainpen ink.

Do you remember whether that Barnes & Noble (I'm presuming you were at the big one in Manhattan) still carried the Ecosystems journals? I have a couple of the small ones (one with lined paper and one with blank paper). But none of the B&N stores near me seem to sell them any longer (even though the company, Sterling, is listed on the Ecosystems website as being a "wholly owned subsidiary of B&N)) in favor of Moleskine and Vera Bradley.... :(

The paper is decent and they came in a bunch of different colors. They have elastic bands to hold them closed, and there were several different "lines" including one with graph paper. They even had a serial number stamped in each one in case you lost it (unfortunately, at the moment their website is (largely) down -- you can get to their main page, but a lot of the links seem to be broken.

I'm asking because I rather like the two I have, but there no longer seems to be a carousel for them in any of the local B&M stores (although the B&N website still lists some).

Sorry, can't help you there... there were so many! to be honest, I was a bit overwhelmed. I did not buy any Ecosystems journal, but that's not to say they did not have them...

I was in two stores: on 5th avenue, and on 17th street (close to Union Square). Both had many different journals, sketchbooks, notebooks... apart from all the books!

That's okay. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I will keep them in mind the next time I'm in NYC.

I can help you with this because I've scoured NYC for the best stationery shops.

The best place is Kinokuniya in midtown near Bryant Park. In the basement you will find a selection of the best Japanese paper, notebooks, pens etc.

A close second is Goods for the Study (the 8th St location, not the one on Mulberry which is tiny). This shop is amazing and I could spend hours there. A vast and lovingly curated selection of stationery mostly from the USA and Europe. The notebook section is incredible.

Ecosystems is pretty much defunct. It was a limited resource and limited life business. They were entirely successful and sold their entire inventory.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

Rats. I liked the two small notebooks, especially the sketchbook one.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
