Any Recommendations For Deckle Edge?

My wife and I just recently got into fountain pens and are still feeling out which pens, inks, and paper we like. I'm putting together a little Valentine's Day package for her and could use a little help.

She likes paper with a deckle edge for writing "thank you" notes and short letters. I've shopped around but haven't found anything suitable yet.

Anyone have a recommendation for something in an A5 size, lighter than card stock, and fountain-pen friendly?

I really appreciate any help I can get.

G Lalo makes Mode de Paris deckle edge notecards w/ envelope in a wide series of colors and in a variety of sizes, available on Amazon and occasionally at a discount on MassDrop.

In addition to Mode de Paris, they have a series called Opera and one called Verge de France...all deckle edged, A5 size and in a variety of colors, with envelope. All are available at US Amazon.

Probably my absolute favourite letter writing paper is ELCO James Velin deckle edge, it comes in A5 or A4. It is gorgeous, but not cheap, and I have no idea about availability other than UK Amazon.

I hate to sound naive, but could someone explain a deckled edge to me?

Thanks

It's a rough edge to the paper, as opposed to a clean cut. It originates from traditional paper-making. Nowadays, I imagine it is cut with a deckle-edging-machine.

Thank you for that. I may have to try some out for February InCoWriMo

As I am also a "Fool for Paper," I trotted over to Amazon US & found the paper available in A4, but sadly the envelopes that seemed to be of same quality were only available in C6, so I don't think we can say Amazon US is much help! I had read the reviews of same on Amazon UK & it sure seemed like it was a favorite of users.

The envelopes I use with A4 sheets are C6 size. I fold the sheets in half top to bottom then in half again side to side and they fit nicely. Envelope sizes

Thank you Chrissy,

As you might imagine I am still struggling with the new standard, (accepted I believe BY EVERY COUNTRY, except the US,) paper measurements. I will go BACK to Amazon & reload my cart; "if it is good enough for you, I am sure it will be fine for me!"

AND I do thank you for helping a US Senior Citizen, today. (I had googled the question, "can a A4 paper be used in a C4 envelope," & come away almost more confused than when I started. I am going to blame my last corded ATT phone's demise & my frustration with a new one that arrived yesterday; I have so far managed to program merely the time/date & have been surprised all day when each caller is "ANNOUNCED," instead of just appearing on the screen. This morning while still in bed, I witnessed this when the phone rang & I first imagined "strangers were speaking in my house," without my awareness of their presence!) .............Tonite, paper..........

AND thanks to you, between February 1-7, I can expect to have 20 envelopes & a 40 sheet pad of this paper.

You are most welcome. Maybe an A4 sheet folded into a DL envelope might be considered more 'traditional', but at least there is still a fit. I'm considering whether to buy this paper and envelopes for InCoWriMo.

However, for my regular US correspondence my usual tactic is to try to keep the weight below 10grams for the Royal Mail stamp price of £1.05. This paper would never work for that stamp price.

I still have a couple of stamps that allow me to mail heavier letters, so I could use them up in February. :)

Thank you.

I have always liked that rough look, but I thought it was only available with handmade papers. I didn't realise you could do it to any paper.

. I used to set fire to the edges of some paper to make it look cool. ;)

If you really, really like her, you could consider this from Twinrocker Paper, down in Brookston:

It's beautiful handmade paper, but a little beyond my budget.

Yeah, Twinrocker is super expensive. My wife and I actually took a tour of their shop, which ended with us making two sheets of paper by hand using their equipment. They're really nice people.

But you all gave me so many great options. It's going to be hard, but I'll narrow it down to three and make it an assortment.

Based on your recommendation, I ordered the James Velin at US Amazon and just wrote a note to a friend today. It is wonderful! Thanks so much for your recommendation.

My paper arrived today, (thanks to your advice!) & it is wonderful. I had good intentions to use it today, but life got in the way; I did however get a small package mailed, so I am still ahead for keeping "on track," for the month. A Birthday card for a friend will suffice for tomorrow if I don't make it to the new paper; I do look forward to using it & thank you again for your encouragement & direction.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
