Emeraude De Chivor – A Quick Dip

This a quick test to start putting into practice some of the wonderful behaviours of fountain pen inks learned over the last 18 months. J Herbin 1670 Emeraude de Chivor is a magnificent ink. Not only does it bleed beautifully with water giving these gorgeous cloud like effects, when adding pen on top you get that dark emerald with the deep pink sheen and, of course, that gold. Once the chromatic process had dried inside the circle, all I had to do was decide what to do with it, so, here are two Edwardian lovers frolicking about in the sea. And all this from one ink!

Art on Bockingford 200lb watercolour paper using a Desiderata Daedalus with titanium zebra G flex nib.

Many thanks to Sam Bell of ExaClair for the sample.

Just for the record – I do this for myself, I receive no remuneration what-so-ever and I tell it exactly how I see it.

Wow! That is gorgeous...the ink and the drawing! Just wow!

Thank you.

Wow. You do such exquisite work. And, truthfully, I had absolutely convinced myself that I had no desire for this ink at all -- I didn't like the underlying color, as being too green leaning (mind you, I absolutely adore Stormy Grey, and have a bottle of the original formula of Rouge Hematite with the large gold flakes). But your artwork brings out the blue more than I expected.

So thanks for posting this. And, um, not.... :wallbash:

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thanks Ruth. Your comments are always appreciated. This personal project is now starting to bear fruit. It is always been about looking at things in a different way and E de C is a classic example. On the surface it's actually quite a difficult fountain pen ink with terrible nib clog issues and the actual ink gets everywhere and stains everything in a 100 metre radius, BUT, use it slightly differently, as means for illustration, and it's actually a very pretty ink. It doesn't like bleach at all and of course if you want to enjoy the pinks and golds you have to view the work at a 45 degree angle in a good light. Even so, the lesson is there - look a little deeper and you might find something unexpected. I know what's coming... Curiosity killed cat! Nx

On the contrary, it is fascinating to read about your work. I have been avidly following your blog for awhile and I love how you get fountain pen inks to play with water and bleach to stunning effect. This really is a great project, and allows me to see my inks from a *very* different perspective! Keep it up!

Nick, I've read your statement and looked through your website - simply breathtaking work. I seem to understand why you are doing it, but still lack understanding "how".. Is it mostly just putting ink into wet paper? That's what it mostly look like.. Or do you brush in bleach onto inked paper?

THanks!

It's about dropping ink into wet watercolour paper and then waiting to see the outcome through the ink's natural chromatography and serendipity. Once dry it's the artist who decides what to do to next. Leave as it is, work on top with pen and bleach or pen and ink or both. There are no rules here, it's all about getting colours and effects from a very limited palette i.e. one ink and possibly some bleach, if appropriate. N

Breathtaking!

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

I agree with the others who are raving about your work, Nick, and am impressed by your ability to see the potential in inks, both humble and grand. The wave image reads as glass to me, which makes it all the more interesting.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
