Pelikan M205 Blue Marble

I'm a big fan of Pelikan pens and as it happens this one is no exception. Thank you for the review. I have always felt that Pelikan is the one company that can make most/all of their design be interesting, attractive while remaining elegant at the same time. Most other manufacturers can pull one or the other but not both at the same time. For instance a MB 149 is elegant yet kind of boring while a Visconti London fog is stunning but a bit 2 flashy to pull in the middle of a conference.

Are you aware that the design is the same in every pen? It's only the colour that changes.

One of my first FPs was a Pelikan- an M200 Red Demo- now, 10+ years on I have about 10 Pel's in my personal collection

(M2xx, M4xx, M620, and vintage). I was always impressed with their beauty and quality!

This was a big reason that I decided to represent the brand in my store! :)

I was very tempted to buy this pen -- it looks gorgeous. But did I want to spend that much money on a pen, especially one that seems to have the reputation of being overpriced. I decided against it.

I agree with the comments about price creep and I have seen some inconsistencies in nibs. No bad nibs mind you but some wandering back and forth in line widths within the same stated nib sizes.

But....they are great pens and as for concerns about how sturdy they are I have to say they are unfounded. I have a couple that have been banging around in my briefcase for years and they have held

up just fine.

"a reputation of being overpriced"

You do realize they also have a reputation for being beautiful, excellent writers, historically interesting, and much sought after by users and collectors around the world...

Overpriced is relative and most often simply a personal opinion. For all the folks who whine about Pelikans being "overpriced" there are so many more happy users and collectors who don't come on the forums to proclaim their good experiences and opinions. Fanboys and haters are just the noisy ends of the spectrum. Best to make the opinion decision on your own, from your own experience.

I certainly understand that there are many pens from MANY manufacturers that are priced beyond what some budgets can comfortably handle. But to simply dismiss a whole line of pens because you heard "they're overpriced" without finding out for yourself whether they are a good fit for you...? That's too bad. You might be surprised to find you like them. (I used to think the same thing about all MBs, but I found out otherwise when I bought a 146).

I don't find the prices that onerous, although I don't think the American prices make sense; but the discussion of middle-man pricing strategies is for another forum. I am blessed to be able to afford many of the pens from companies that make great higher end pens. But the ones that I cannot afford or that do not appeal to me don't prompt me to go all troll on the internet  Somebody else likes them, more power to them.

Now, so as not to be accused of derailing the thread, I did purchase a Pelikan M205 Blue Marble with a Fine nib last summer. I find it quite beautiful and the one I received worked perfectly out of the box (as have all of the Pels I've acquired... I know, hate me for being "lucky"if you must). The blue marble finish is quite a bit brighter and more interesting, more alive, than the blue marble finishes in the past, and the silver furniture really makes a great difference, keeping the overall effect on the cool side that matches the blue material much better than gold might imho. I have more than one M2xx Pelikan but this one is one of my current favorites. Great pen, and I always keep my eye on the auctions in case a well priced one comes up... I'd buy another.

Nice review on your Blue 205! It looks like a nice pen. I have a M200 and a M215 and they are nice pens. I hope you enjoy yours for a long time.

Thanks for the review. That is a really pretty color binde -- especially with those gold speckles which seem to catch the light.

I had the option last week to get one of those (the invoice was screwed up) but I really had my heart set on the M405 Striated Blue (I've wanted a Striated Blue Pel ever since I first learned of the brand...). But the M205 may very well go on my wish list. I may even see if I can get just the barrel and cap -- and then stick the IM nib from the (replacement) Café Crème on it. Or swap out the M nib from the Green Marble M200 someone gave me and put the IM nib on that pen instead....

ETA: Of course a (yet another :wallbash:) replacement Café Crème is higher on said wish list.... Sigh....

  • 3 months later...

I just picked up one at Akkerman's in The Hague while on vacation. My goal was to try all the Pelikans, as I have no pen stores near me at home. I almost walked away without buying anything but a Safari demonstrator, but I couldn't put this pen down. The colors are wonderful and a perfect match for the Miles Davis ink I bought with it.

Mine is not transparent, Maybe it's the close ink color, maybe it's my bad eyes, but I have no idea how much ink I got in when I filled it. I am also concerned about disassembling it. I like to use many different inks, but I think I am resigned to stick with blues for this one. The screw rings are somewhat bothersome, but they have not caused me pain in long writing sessions. The size is perfect for me. I like a smaller, lighter pen for writing prose and poetry. This pen is smooth, produces a nice line, and keeps up to my fast hen scratching. It feels good to write with color-wise. The blue marble sings to me. I tried the green, but it was too distracting. The blue is very relaxing when writing with it. The only pen I've felt like this with.

We'll see how long my love lasts.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
