Robert Oster Signature - Direct Sun

Recommended Posts

I got sample of Robert Oster Signature - Direct Sun as a part of larger collaborative meta-review of Rober Oster's inks for the United Inkdom ,which should be completed within next few days I believe.

The first one -Direct Sun, I would like to share here is quite unusual saturated red which lean toward brown undertones (especially with wet or semiflex nibs) but not as much as for instance Diamine 150 Anniversary - Terracotta, which is definitely more brown than red. Robert Oster Direct Sun is red, no doubt, especially on bright white paper. On toned ivory paper it looks different. As far as I know, Direct sun is not representing sun in zenith but rather summer Australian sun above the horizon just before the sunset. To me personally is reminding some particular redish type of bricks.

Ink performs very well. Is not too wet and not too dry. Well balanced. The same with the dyes. I would say, saturation is right. It does some gradual shading especially noticeable with the lighter strokes. Have not noticed any feathering on bleeding through, un;less you use cheap horrible and absorbing copy (let's call it) paper. Anyway, pretty cool ink.

For a little bit more about it please check my post on my blog. Thanks

here are some pictures: Hope you will enjoy

Check the 3rd and 4th pics from the bottom. Fairly good. Interesting with some paper types it can look like darker red/carmel - quite bizarre. I had problem with comparing it to any other ink, really. Some one suggested Diamine Ancient Copper....maybe a little

Beautiful handwriting, review, and photographs. I can see that you were using several widths of Lamy nibs for many of the samples. What nib were you using in the photograph that is 5th from the bottom. Some of the words in the sample include "funeral, have lost, never written, must bear."

Thank you for this review!

I have just come inside after being in falling 20 degree temperatures & having wondered "why did I EVER complain about summer HEAT?

I WANT THIS INK!

I realise it may not make my hands warmer, BUT your review DID; & I will be ordering a bottle of this. You have presented it in a way that makes it one of the most complex & intriguing inks I have seen introduced.

Stunning review, as always.
I can only begin to imagine how much time and effort you put into your findings and am grateful that you share them with us all.

I'm all good for red inks at the moment but this has to be a contender for when I need a new one.

:) :)

Bob, for most 'written test' I use 2 inexpensive and easy to maintain pens. One is Lamy Safari which allows me to swap various size nibs easily. Second pen I use is a Noodler's Ahab ('ink abused and stained' demonstrator). However, I swapped an original Noodler's stainless steel semi-flex nib with the same size also semi-flex steel nib I've purchased from Kevin and Fountain Pen Revolution. Very simple and pragmatic approach.

Pretty..huh ? :)

Thanks. I would always urge people to get small sample of the ink before commit to 50 ml bottle. Please remember, this inks is not a red-red ink. is much darker and feels a bit brownish on some paper types.

I don't normally like this shade. But Direct Sun is nice looking -- it reminds me of the base color of J Herbin 1670 Rouge Hematite. Definitely need to put this on the "try a sample" list.

Thanks for the review. And, uh, not.... :headsmack:

Your splashes and writing samples would make almost any ink look good. This ink is one of my favorites in the Robert Oster line, and you make it look spectacular.

If I were an inkmaker, I'd be paying you a pretty penny to use your photos on my web site. Please keep those blog posts and reviews coming!

THAT DOES IT!

a 5 Gallon Bucket of Direct Sun should be decanted by Mr. Oster & headed your way!

A mere bottle will serve my needs since today is projected to hit 40 degrees, with gradual warming till Thursday of near 60........ (I am NOT looking beyond this date for fear of what may follow!)

Hey Mateusz... Do you have Astorquiza-Rot??... The only red-brown in Robert Oster lineup is currently Astorquiza-Rot.

Just wondering?

Unfortunately not. At thi very moment I only received samples of Direct Sun and Barossa Grape. However. I am planning to get more Robert's inks ro be looked at. They seem to be really cool. Some have fascinating sheen.

Your "best" is as good as & equal to ANY ink I have seen introduced here on FPN! I mentioned your review of this ink today to the "Good Folks @ Vanness Pens," when I ordered this ink. I am happy to say I was ordering a couple of the new Akkerman/Great Master's inks from them & was actually MORE excited about this ink you "brought to my attention!" They also had a newly arrived ink from Mr. Oster that I am betting will "tickle Ms Claudia's fancy," when she sees it, "Melon Tea," also added to the order. It is a compliment to Mr. Oster that his $18.00 inks excite me more than the $38.00 Akkerman's newly released bottles.

Your review however is what sold this ink for me; I am NOT usually a fan of "Reds/leaning Orange," which it appeared when I first found it available. I thank you for your intriguing review & look forward to it's arrival.

Oster Melon Tea may well be a green-haloed version of Sailor Cigar.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
