Those are fabulous, tartuffo - thanks for the reference - I didn't know Pelikan did regular demonstrators either! Cool. Lots to consider.

Pen arrived but,... hit again by the folks at the Canadian border. Package not opened, but taxed for the insured CAD value of the goods. All declarations on the US side were done correctly.

Close to 50.00 CAD to get it out of hawk at the Post Office. :gaah:

I actually owned (& paid tax on) the pen before Pendleton got to work on it. :(

Damn, that's outrageous! Is there nowhere you can appeal or complain?

I'm all waku-waku!

(waku-waku: Japanese for excited especially with anticipation; on tenterhooks; with pen mail imminent... great word I reckon, although I may have invented the last part of the definition - sounds like a choppy guitar riff while you're waiting too to build the excitement!)

My Swan Minor is due today, and my Jackdaw should be this Friday...!

Not really.

I have officially appealed to the border agency with documentation (covering letter, original receipt) to prove that I have purchased the said goods & paid the Canadian version of VAT.

They kept the original paperwork & denied my appeal, however suggested that I could go higher up the chain of bureaucracy, with the proper original documentation. But,... they had my original documents (my mistake).

Finally I gave up.

why returned Montegrappa Heartwood again

The first one in teak had several cracks in the wood so that went back. The second in teak was inspected for cracks and sent to me but actually had a ding in the end of the pen body that was missed. Cost me almost $12 to send it back since the vendor wouldn't send me another return label. It's been a very frustrating experience. I also had to return my Heartwood Pear previously for the plating having bare spots. I'm not really enjoying my Montegrappa experience right now. The last three I've bought have not been very good at all and one of those was an Extra Otto at over $1k.

Monteverde Jewelria candy orange with a stub nib. I hadn't really planned to buy another pen this month, but it was on sale, so I kind of had to take the opportunity.
Can hardly wait 'till it's here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
