Strange Leakage With Generation

Hi,

A strange problem with one of my Generations.

When I pull of the cap I often find a tiny little ring, or at last tiny drops, of ink on the section a few millimeters above the nib.

This is when I use Montblanc cartridges. If I use the official converter it almost always happens.

Furthermore I sometimes get a smudge on the tip of my index, where I have been holding the pen.

Otherwise it writes well.

It has been cleaned thoroughly with ultra sound, and even 5% ammonium solution.

I have not had similar problems with my other Generation.

 

Has anyone else had the same problem? What could the cause be? Some kind off suction when I pull off the cap? Or some microscopic holes in the section? I haven't seen any with a loupe.

Ha!!!

 

Finally someone with the same issue as me!!

 

I can confirm this with a Generation Fountain Pen from the late 90s/2000 with OB nib pen which I bought new back then. I had it for warranty service once in its first year but the same thing happened with the "repaired" pen. As far as I could see with a loupe - it's a hairline crack.

 

Will try to take a picture of it at home tonight.

 

I don't know if repairing it again will yield anymore help for me. But this is very annoying. It seems to me that this is not an isolated issue - especially since I used this pen not too much.

 

While we have a MB service center here where I live (UAE) - the availability of older parts is not necessary a given. And the repair usually costs a generous $95 for a replacement of any resin part.....

 

So - sorry for not having better news for you - but at least for me the repair didn't fix the issue for long.

But no, I later found a microscopic crack.

I wonder if anything can be done about it?

Dang! Shame.

Where is it? On the section?

See if you can get a picture?

 

You might get some suggestions from the Repairs Q&A forum, concering crack repair.

All depends on the material. (Resin?) But it's pretty specialist stuff, as a rule.

A donor/parts/scrap pen can often be the most economical solution (if you can find one).

Ok - here is the mess - I left a cartridge in the pen - now took it out and voila - ink everywhere - quickly wiped the ink away and got a clearer shot - for me - very clearly to see a hairline crack - I am pretty sure that's where the ink comes out....

bummer - I had a hairline crack on the other side before repairing - then it got repaired (replaced) and developed a new crack on the other side. If anyone has any idea what to do besides sending it in to Montblanc.... I am all ears...

 

Though I just realized: this is a "classic" so the predecessor of the "Generations"....

Yup, that's where they cracked. I doubt there is a fix for it other than replacing the hood. Not at all sure Montblanc can still do that so ask first.

Thanks for your answer and what a shame. I will check with the closest MB boutique here - I wonder though if I caused this with any kind of excessive use of force or if this is just a bad design and hence that will happen to them all in the long run.... hmmmm. Repair will likely set me back around $95 - not sure if it's worth it.

I have successfully repaired worse section cracks than that by means of black nail polish. But you probably don't want to do that to a MB.

Ah well, nail polish is sort of reversible, so I might as well give that a try depending on the outcome of Brad Torelli's answer.... thanks for that recommendation.

Nail polish may not be reversible!

 

Nail polish often contains nitrocellulose dissolved in butyl acetate or ethyl acetate.

 

Butyl acetate can attack and/or dissolve some plastics.

 

Ethyl acetate can attack and/or dissolve some plastics.

 

Be aware of what chemicals you're putting on your pens before you do damage.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
