Montblanc Ultra Black LE Ink

I believe Montblanc company doesn't need introduction here. Each year Montblanc offers few LE inks. Their evil-minded marketing team creates interesting colors that soon become unavailable. Not all of them are great but almost all of LE ink become sought after after they're gone and are sold for outrageous prices.

Personally I have mixed feelings about idea of LE inks but I enjoy some of them a lot. Montblanc LE red inks were great (Winter Glow can easily concur with Maruzen Nihombashi Akane; it's not the same and but still amazing). As I dislike blacks in general, I didn't expect to enjoy Ultra Black. And guess what? I don't.

The ink comes in nice cardboard box. Inside the box is 30 ml glass bottle:

Ultra Black isn't really black. It's more dark navy-grey or something like this. It's far from blackest black. The ink behaves well and is fairly wet. It doesn't feather. I haven't experienced any blledthrough. All in all if you enjoy Montblanc inks or you collect them this one may be nice addition to your collection. If however you're practical person who looks for well writing black ink you'll easily find cheaper alternatives that are simply better (better lubrication, more blackness, better water resistance). This black is simply decent.

You'll find a lot of useful informations in Lapis' review of this ink.

Thanks for your review Vis. I concur - this is a very underwhelming ink & it's certainly far from Ultra black.

As suggested by Migo, not particularly special is it, competant maybe but that is all.

Perhaps that is all that can be expected of black.

Looks like a Leipziger Schwarz doppleganger . . . I like it :)
Thanks for showing it off.

However Leipziger Schwarz is £4.85 per 50ml and this MB LE is £13 for 30ml

- as Consuela from Family Guy would say . . . "Noooo"

You would think that something called Ultrablack will be really black :)

+1 on that - this looks dark grey to me (like the finish on the pen!!).

Okay, I will admit, I actually liked it, but I agree, where was the ultra? It was fun for washes and the bottle is great. It's just not really black.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 3 weeks later...

I hated this ink! Everything was good until I ran my finger across the page WEE AFTER the ink was dry and it smeared, even though it was dry!

Not a good ink!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
