I agree that the gem-encrusted versions look horrible (although I suspect that this is intentional on MB's part and they already have a buyer in China lined up). OTOH, I kind of like the Silk Road LE 69 version with Damascus steel and rosewood - it's different for MB and a lot more restrained (IMHO) than most of the other LE versions I've seen.

Darn! If only I had not foolishly wasted my money on food and shelter I could have secured a glorious pen that so tenuously ties small parts of history to sparkly bits.

While reading your post I laughed out loud.

You ‘get’ the ethos prevailing among a certain strata of the newly affluent where I live.

They do see glitz as evidence of glorious civilization.

Lol. I do enjoy looking at these limited edition pens that Montblanc puts out, but I wouldn't even entertain spending that amount of money on a pen when there are so many higher priorities. I have taken the plunge on getting a Hakase and a Romillo Nervion, but I debated for quite a while before I took the plunge. I couldn't imagine spending the type of money that these pens require...I would love to get a Montblanc Skeleton, but can't imagine spending $7k to $10k on a fountain pen.

I envy you - a Hakase is one of my Japanese grail pens and I've heard nothing but praise for Romillo...I'm sure you will enjoy them both!

That said, in this price range you are not buying a pen - you're buying a piece of art. I suspect that most collectors who buy pens at this level don't buy them to write with them, they put them in a safe somewhere.

JLS1, it was a steep plunge when I decided to get the Hakase and Romillo Nervion. It took months of thought, filled with commitment and then backing out. Even after ordering the pen, I was filled with excitement and a good amount of regret at having spent that amount of money - money I could have used for my family. That being said, all those feeling reconciled when I received the pens and started using them. I love both dearly, especially my Hakase. I hope one day you will be able to get your grail pens :).

These Montblancs are definitely art pieces, but I feel sad when I see a fountain pen that is not being used. What use is having a pen, the main purpose of which is to write, sitting there to be admired and held ever so often? A painting is meant to be gazed at...a pen is meant to be written with.

Couldn't have put it better!

Richemont plc proving they still have a sense of humour (laughing all the way to the bank)

The bling on that first one is way to glitzy for me. But I understand some folks like that sort of thing. That damask is very appealing, but I'm not sure it works with that wood combo.
