Well, this one looks at least like a M.

There are no markings on a MB nib to determine nib size, only on the box and sometimes on a little sticker on the pen. So maybe the pen got into a wrong box or - more likely - the nib just happens to be on the very wide side of F (after all the nibs are hand ground and variations are normal with MB nibs).

Greetings,

Michael

Its all relative terms, your idea of a fine or medium may be very different from a persons experience of Japanese pens.

Your writing sample to me would suggest a medium width line, which is waht I would expect from an Mb Fine nib. A few years ago I had a Broad Stub nib by MB and that wrote like a BBB from any other maker.

If you want a finer line than your pen currently produces you may need to go to an EF nib.

So, I dont think they gave you the wrong nib, its just that the nib that they gave you doesnt meet your expectations.

Personally I would adjust my expectations before swapping the nib.

Ok, so it's written on the white box? I have to check that when I come home from work! :)

The nib size is mentioned on the outer box of the pen. I have not tried other pens but it Is possible that different pens have different standards for nibs. Best to go to the Mb boutique and try the nibs out. I think they have it from Extra Fine (EF) to BBB. If you find that they have given you a wrong nib then I think they should be able to exchange it.

The other scenario is if you did not drain your ink right. If you did not let the six to seven drops fall out of the pen after filling it then it can look thicker.

Thanks. I can't go back, because I bought the pen in another country. I don't think I will change it, but I do think it looks broader than the "F" I tried in the store.

If it was purchased new there was a sticker on the body that showed what nib was installed.

Thanks for posting the Bohème image. I like the BB sticker.

To the right of the pen, as shown, there's another sticker unlike any I've seen.

Squinting my ‘seeing eye’, it looks like it might read ‘Made in Germany’.

Is that so, or am I imagining what's not there?

Yes, that sticker does say "Made in Germany".

BUT... it is not a Bohème.

Look here for the story.

Yeah I know, but I was in a hurry and didn't pay much attention to what was written on the sticker before I removed it :)

-I asked for a "fine" nib, and I would be very surprised if he gave me a wrong one. -I still have the white box, and will check when I get home.

What a great story!

Thanks so much for the link.

Glad to be straightened out, especially with such a tale.

The presence of the ‘Made in Germany’ sticker on the pen seemed different than current practice.

Thinking about your ‘find’ one can't help but grin.

Montblanc nibs are notorius for not being "standardized" as they are hand ground. I think the MB Fine nibs are about .40 mm in general...so It may well be a "Fine" nib...it's just thicker than what you would want.

If you love the pen, a good nibmeister can reground it to the thickness you desire.

One chart the I've found helpful is the 'Stroke Width Chart' that you can do a search for on: http://www.richardspens.com. Do a search for stroke width chart, when you get the page go down to the bottom and you will find a chart pdf that you can download. It is great for checking nib widths.

I think you got the wrong nib and the chart isn't specific to any given brand of pen, but you can determine the width of the nib you do have.

MB's have an international guarantee.

Yes, it should be a F=fine. But as mentioned: the nibs are hand ground - so there's quite a lot of variation possible... I don't think that the shop assistant is to blame.

Greetings,

Michael

Im satisfied with this nib. It was just a bit broader than I remembered from the store :) I'm very glad to hear that variations are possible. Then I know it's normal.
