Leuchtturm 1917 - The Next Moleskine?

I got three Leuchtturm notebooks, and all were made in different countries and all have different paper.

For my purposes I cannot complain as I'm usually writing with fine or medium nibs and blue or black inks whicht don't bleed much even on cheaper paper.

But recently I bought a couple of cheap notebooks which cost 1/5 of the leuchtturm price and have a slightly inferior paper quality, but still acceptable for me.

I just purchased one of these and horribly disappointed. I don't care for Rhodia so much since I feel the paper is too smooth, so I figured the 1917 would make a good carry notebook capable of dealing with FP inks. After a few pages of bleed thru and feathering with every ink I tried, I shelved it with the few Moleskins I have for later use with a ballpoint or pencil.

Back to the search.

I love my Leuchtturm plain a5 notebook and have no bleed through issues at all. I find the paper quality to be much better than the Moleskine paper quality.

I bought mine on ebay for cheap, though, so I didn't have much to loose when buying it. I think Paperblanks are even more fountain pen friendly, so if you're disappointed in Leuchtturm I would try a Paperblanks notebook :) .

I have been writing in a A5 lined Leuchtturm with a TWSBI Eco 1.1mm nib, and have had no bleed through, or feathering with Diamine Schubert and Wagner inks. There is show through, but nothing that makes the back side of the page unusable. In my experience with a dozen Moleskine notebooks, in at least four or five different varieties, the paper in the A5 lined Leuchtturm is far superior. Though these inks appear to hold up decently with the Moleskine notebooks I have at hand, they do feather a bit (spider-webbing?) compared to the Leuchtturm. I also have a Rhodia Color A5(No.16) notebook with Schubert in it, and the line width, see through, and lack of feathering is very similar to that seen in the Leuchtturm. This maybe a matter of luck of the draw, and possible manufacturing differences between factories, or it can be a matter of different inks and wetness of nibs, but compared to my Moleskine notebooks, I do not find myself wanting to write in something else. In fact, I want to write more and more when using this notebook, and with me being currently stuck in moving onto the next part of the story I am writing is quite annoying!

FP Ink Orphanage-Is an ink not working with your pens, not the color you're looking for, is never to see the light of day again?!! If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! Please PM me!For Sale: TBA

I have a couple of Leuchtturm A5 notebooks. I've only ever had some showthrough with them, using a variety of inks in XF and F nibs. I did, however, purchase a Leuchtturm pocket jottbook. I had bleedthrough with DA Aubergine on that one.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste. Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet. Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away.... I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link.... Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
