Noodler's 54Th Mass Or Bad Blue Heron?

I know this is going to rank up there with "first world problems"....but I am having a hard time deciding between the 2.

I recently got a sample vial of each to try. it was in my quest to find a good feather/bleed resistant ink similar to Noodler's Black.

When I first put the 54th Mass in my pen, I loved it. The color/shading/characteristics....just did it for me. At that point I almost just went out and bought a bottle of it...but I convinced myself to go and finish off the sample vials first. I didn't think I'd love the Bad Blue Heron as much as i did but I love it just as much as i do 54th Mass!

I'll probably end up getting a bottle of each eventually...but it is a blessing and a curse that we have so many great ink choices.

Leaning toward 54th just a little more, but I can't see me going wrong with either.

:D

Born in Boston, I would lean to 54th Mass. I thought about buying some, but just continued with Sheaffer's scrip blue black. This ink might eventually fill that old Scrip well bottle, though.

I have had bad luck with BBH (lots of feathering). It also has a strong odor. Haven't tried the other yet. Good luck with your decision.

I haven't tried BBH but did wasn't overly enthralled with Bad Belted Kingfisher (another of the Warden series ink). I really like 54th MA a lot, which surprised me, since I didn't think I'd like the color. I did find that there was significant color difference between the sample and a full bottle (the sample was much darker).

I have BBK and BBH but not 54th Ma...

I like both of them, and my particular favourite varies depending on which one I am using.

Bad Blue Heron is not very well behaved in my experience. Being a Warden series ink it has tendency to be quite aggressive. The bottle I have is going to last me a looong time. Probably my least favorite of Noodler's inks.

Perhaps read this thread first.

My bottle of 54th Mass completely degraded & the colour changed, after a few months (see post #2)

This problem I have had with BBH. The ink I have is in a turquoise shade, not near the colour i've seen everybody else have.

BBK and 54th has worked much better for me, especially 54th.

54th Massachusetts all the way. 54th Mass behaves well even on cheap paper.

Yeah...there is just something about that 54th that keeps pulling me in. :D

54. Most permanent ink I've ever seen- spilled some on concrete outside in January (filling really quick and needed some air), and 7 months later after wind, snow, ice, rain and sun, it's still there. The HoD I placed nearby a couple weeks ago is already fading a bit, about as much as the 54 in half a year.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
