Sailor Clear Candy Eyedropper Conversion: Possible?

Recommended Posts

Saw a review of the Sailor Clear Candy and got intrigued by it's fine nib and how people praise the F-2 nib. I think the demonstrator would make a fine eyedropper (because I think converter demonstrators make little sense), but can it be done? I never had the pleasure of owning a Preppy and I never tried to convert one before, so I have no idea if it is possible. I know the rear end of the barrel is friction fit: will silicone grease suffice, or will it need to be superglued?

Probably no one has tried the conversion, so as you could be the first.

I see that the back of the barrel is closed by a plastic part, this could be, apart the usual thread between barrel and section, another point where ink could escape. Why do you not try to fill the barrel with water and look at what happen?

If there are no water leaks, the pen should work fine also as eyedropper.

I never modified any before. My concern is if it'll leak from the section, as the cap is screw on and I don't know if an o-ring will fit

To avoid leak from the section, you could put some silicone grease between the threads.

I wouldn't bother with an o-ring personally. It looks from the pictures like there are sufficient threads between the section and barrel. I would get some silicon grease or beeswax and apply liberally to this threads. Also if the back section is removable there too. Them test with water like alfredop said. It should be completely reversible as you only have to wash of the grease of the threads.

It's not the threads on the section that will give you problems. It's the plug in the back of the barrel. It's not leak proof unless you do some modification. I didn't want to plug up the barrel with epoxy, so I just called the idea of making it an eyedropper pen a bust.

A thin veil of gel superglue wouldn't suffice to seal that "blind cap" into place?

Superglue, which is cyanoacrylate is somewhat hygroscopic and absorbs water, so I wouldn't recommend it. Extended exposure can weaken it.

I think shellac would work. But rather than trying to fix it on permanently (I'm assuming it's hard to remove already) you want to create a seal, I still think a generous application of silicone grease will be able to do this. Should be easy to test and fully reversible.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
