What Pelikan? Or A Frankenpen?

Recommended Posts

The cap is 140. What is the pen? A 400?

And this is the nib. 14k M.

$50.00 is the asking price. The poor pics are provided by the seller based in Karachi.

Thanks in advance.

pen looks like a m400 old style to me (frankenpen). I would say that if the pen is in working order, 50 usd is a very good price for it, considering the gold nib.

Yes, that is what I thought about the pen being a 400 of the old style. And yes, the pen is in working order.

The tip of the nib looks a tad bent...perhaps from being in the 140's cap. It can be straighten out very, very easy.

Place the nib tip on a 1/2 inch 1.5cm pad of paper, take the blunt end of a drill bit and as you press down on the nib tip....stroke it with the drill bit just a tad.

Then get any 400 or 200's cap...later you can source a '50's cap.

From my reading, I decided to check it out if it was true or not that the 140 cap didn't fit the 400. I tried the 400's nib on a 140 no problem...I tried the 140 cap on the 400 and there was a slight ticking, of the nib hitting the cap top.

Some folks had no problems...doing such....others did.

I had no 'problem' in I stopped as soon as I heard the 'ticking'.

The nib will be semi-flex  or maxi-semi-flex  ....there is no way to tell. But the 140 (always semi-flex) which that is not, and the 400-200n were semi or maxi's...........((out side nibs marked H for hard and D for destroys tanks. The nails nail. It does not look so marked.))

I sort like semi-flex got some 25-30 of them  , lucked into some 15 maxi-semi-flex.

It is pure luck with Pelikan which you will get. I have a 400 & 400n in semi-flex and a 500 & 400nn in maxi-semi-flex.

The only pen company from that era that you can tell if it is semi or maxi; is Osmia, the diamond is semi-flex and the Supra nib is maxi-semi-flex....be that gold or steel and both are =.

I can't quite tell if it says 14 C or not nor can I see if it says OM... :puddle:. But the top of the nib could be.

Or, it could be the little bend from too short a cap....don't worry about it.

Definitely a frankenpen. Perhaps a 400 body with a 140 cap.

Thank you all. Bought the pen for $44. Would now have to source a correct M400 cap. Pen is still in the mail.

Could be a 300 cap, in which case you got a scarce piece. Measure it when you get it in hand.

Let it arrive and I would do the measurement. Would you please explain how would it be a scarce piece if the cap belonged to a 300?

Quote: "The Pelikan 300 is a mixture of the models 400 and 140. In length it is equal to the Pelikan 400, and the cap head is in the style of the Pelikan 140. A 300 can be rebuilt using parts from a Pelikan 140 and a 400. Original Pelikan 300s have the model name engraved on the cap ring and on the barrel end. They were mainly produced for export, and so most models have EXPORT engraved on the barrel end, too."

When you get the pen Khan, check it out. You could have a rather rare pen (or a frankenpen). Whatever it will still be a great pen.

Thank you Peter. Let the pen arrive and see what it is. A 400 with 140 cap or a 300? But as you said I hope it would be a great pen. I have also purchased a 400NN with the binde coming off the pen. Shall I remove the remaining binde off the pen and use it without it? Or shall I send it for custom binde?

It will work OK without the binde but it might be a good idea to look into getting a custom binde. I would think someone in Pakistan could help out with that. Good luck with both pens.

Ok, Peter. And thank you once again for the insight. I have just found a good source in Karachi that deals in Pelikan pens. He says he would let me have more and more Pelikans both modern and vintage in the coming days and months. Until now I was not having any Pelikan pens.

Now I have good sources for Parkers, Sheaffers, Japanese pens, German pens and also other European pens.

Sound like Karachi is the place to go. Great.

The pen has arrived.

Some observations:

The nib is not bent. It does not hit the top of the cap when capped.

The cap is of a 140 as inscribed on the cap band.

The nib is M.

The piston is working smoothly.

The barrel internal is super clean with no traces of dried ink.

So I assume a good frankenpen.

Thank you Peter. I would use the pen with the same 140 cap until I source a 400 cap for the pen as I couldn't find any technical issues with this cap on the pen. The pen fully threads into the cap and the nib does not hit or even touch the top of the cap. I heave inserted a stèel rod into the cap and it goes way more deep into the cap then where the pen stop fully threaded inside the cap.

Anyhow, my friend in Karachi has assured me he would soon get me the 400 cap.

Great. Hope your friend soon comes up with the 400 cap. In the meantime it looks quite attractive with the 140 cap.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
