Has anyone bought the relatively new 1912 Capless Rollerball? Impressions about the new rollerball refills for this pen? Thanks.

I did not purchase the 1912 but I did get the M which used the same capless rollerball refill. I actually purchased a style writer and changed it out to a rollerball. I don't have a ton of experience with rollerballs, as the only other one I own is a Legrand rollerball refill. I changed out that cartridge at the same time as I installed the capless refill and here are the comparisons.

I have only been using it for about a month and so far there has been no decline in performance from new. My boutique did not have the refills in stock so I had to order them online and they were not as easy to get as other montblanc refills. I would assume with time they will get easier to find. I got the pacific blue and the ink is noticeably darker than the legrand pacific blue. It also seems to apply much wetter when put to paper and it does smear a lot easier than the standard rollerball.

Neither of these are a primary pen so I don't use them a ton. I have not had any issues with drying out or anything out of the ordinary. I did have to do a good amount of research to find the refills. The come one to a pack and come sealed in foil as opposed to the legrand refills that are two to a box and capped but without a foil seal.

Hope this helps

Thanks for this nice reply. I have been thinking about buying this Rollerball to go with my Heritage 1912 FP. The local MB Boutique now has the pens on hand so I will stop by sometime soon and take look. I was mainly interested in how well the new rollerball cartridges hold up -- I have never owned a MB rollerball, but it has been my understanding that the old style of cartridges don't last long. Given the price of the new version I was wondering how performance compared.

I tried both the resin and the steel version in the madison store. I like the steel version better because it got a good weight to it. I almost brought it but the sale lady told me that the capless refile doesn't last that long compare to the regular roller ball refill because it is much shorter than the regular roller ball refill. So I hold off on the purchase because not that many MB store have refills for this pen. However, my problem with the regular refill is not how many pages it can write before you use all the ink but that it dries out even when you don't use it. One time I put a fresh roller ball refill in my pen and wrote about 5 pages, I than caped the pen and did not use it for about 4 month. When I used it again 4 month later it wrote for another 2 pages before the pen started skipping and eventually stopped working. The conclusion I came up was that the refill (due to water base ink) had dried out even when the pen was capped. As far as writing feel, I think it is smoother than the regular roller ball refill.

Saw the rollerball at a local MB boutique earlier today and it looks good. The price difference between the resin and steel is not a lot (unlike the resin FP to the titanium one) and it looks very nice and clean.

Sure, the rollerball does compliment the FP very nicely but I already have a 161 Le Grand platinum BP and it's my almost daily writer together with my 1912, so they both are a great pair. If the 1912 rollerball was out together with the 1912 FP, I'd definitely get it.

The refills should be readily available but since they are quite small, best is to have some spare refills with you unless you don't use it on a daily basis. The 'ink life' reminded me of the ink capacity in the 1912 FP which I have to refill it once every week.

I picked up both the resin and the stainless steel. The resin is for the wife and the SS is for me. :D I was surprised how fast the SS went. I use a FP at work for my main writing instrument and the SS 1912 capless rollerball in my home office for jotting things down, etc. I love how it writes.
