2016 Diary With Fp Friendly Paper

Recommended Posts

So it begins again, the search for a page a day diary that doesn't bleed through.

Based in the UK I have been using Collins' offerings for the past 3 years, but not totally satisfied. Does anyone have any experience of this one from the Journal Shop:

Any other suggestions from UK?

Agree with Collins and pretty well all diaries in the UK. Don't know Cartesio, but looks a bit like Quo Vadis, would that be right?

I use Brepols Saturnus, from Belgium, for years now. Some osmosis, with a fat wet nib, but regular (industrial) nibs are fine. A5, hard cover, page per day version is under 5 Euros. Brepols make nice paper generally.

One has to make a trip to Belgium, though, but that is not too hard to take.

Sorry no direct experience with the brand you are interested in.

Thanks for your input. Don't know Quo Vadis...

Never heard of Brepols Saturnus. As you say, it only looks to be available in Belgium - possibly France too through FNAC.

Any other suggestions?

If you don't mind having to purchase online, there is Quo Vadis, as was previously mentioned, but also Rhodia (http://www.bureaudirect.co.uk/2016-rhodia-diaries/c621).

I have purchased several things from Bureau Direct (no affiliation) and I have been well pleased. I am in the states and the shipping took a week. With you already being in the UK I'm sure that you would receive your order much faster. Also they have free shipping within the UK on orders over £10. The customer service is lovely. They also carry the Quo Vadis planner and the Leuchtturm planner (paper may be slightly inferior to the other two).

I hope this helps!

There's also the Hobonichi Techo. You can get it from Japan or from KawaiiJapan (on etsy.com) or likely some other distributors. I love mine.

I ca tell you that two products are terrible with fountain pens: DayTimer and Franklin-covey day planners. Fabulous time management tools, both, great with pens and better with pencils (the pencil tis he best tool for these things) but I want to use the fountain pen to take notes and write in the diary. The paper sucks, literally. The ink just is drawn from the nib like a sponge sucks up water.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

re: Franklin Covey. It's been a few years, but I used to use the Monticello format paper. Seemed to be of higher quality and worked fine even with somewhat wet writing M nib pens (e.g., Parker DuoFold and Pelikan 800, with inks such as Parker, Waterman, Diamine). Have you tried this paper?

I'd send you a page or two but all of my leftover forms are as I said from several years ago; I have no idea if there have been changes.

Anyone else have experience with the Monticello format of Franklin Covey?

I've used Bureau Direct and highly recommend. Reliable supplier of Clairefontaine including the new small size, not quite A5. Nice gridded paper. I'm not a fan of Leuchtturm (I dislike elastics with books, catch on things in my bags), but I believe they get their paper from C'taine. Rhodia is just another C'taine brand, isn't it? There is a Fabriano shop in Covent Garden in London, fab paper when I was in the other day, but I wasn't looking for planners. They make incredible paper.

I would recommend the Hobonichi Techo. Perfect for fountain pens as it uses Tomoe River paper. It has monthly, weekly and daily planning pages and its A6 size so very portable. You can purchase them from The Journal Shop in the UK. They may seem expensive but they're ideal.

Failing that the Rhodia webplanner.

Thanks for your thoughts. I was really excited to read about the Rhodia but was disappointed to see that it's not a page a day. I've seen the Quo Vadis but don't like the page format with times on it - I want if for a personal rather than a business diary.

Looks nice and paper sounds excellent, but am looking for an A5 format page a day rather than A6.

Thanks for the kind thought. I used to use Monticello when I was into planners.

Thanks for your input. It doesn't seem that Clairefontaine make diaries. Rhodia would be ideal, but don't like the format they use in their new A5 WebPlanner Fabriano sounds great, I'll have to investigate whether they do diaries, as I think they're into art paper.

The Hobonichi Techo sounds great, but it's A6 and costs £35. See earlier comment about the Rhodia offering.

The Letts brand, in particular the Connoisseur A5 diary is pretty good. They, like Collins, have been around for ages and I should imagine is a worthy candidate.

Also, you might like to give these people a go- http://www.thejournalshop.com/2016-diaries

I am not affiliated with them, just a happy customer!

Thanks for your thoughts. I haven't looked at Letts since school. Collins is OK, but have used them for the past few years and you do get bleed-through, that's why I was looking for an alternative.

I didn't use these kind of diary, but usually I very satisfied with Bomo-Art products, and they have what you looking for and isn't really hard to get those in UK. Whatever I threw to they paper it was accepted the challenge. Duofold with medium nib? No problem...

You could take a look at the Hobonichi "Cousin". That one is an A5 size. Interesting option if you like Tomoe River Paper (and grid paper). It does have times along the left side, I believe, but otherwise it's pretty flexible. http://www.1101.com/store/techo/2016/planner/all_about/cousin/.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just couldn't afford to stump up £58 for a diary, however perfect it might be though .

Again it looks perfect but can't find a price for it and suspect it's out of my price range. Would find hard to just spending more than £15-20!

Paying more than £10 for an agenda? My Brepols are under 5 euros and have good FP paper. It is a diary not a social statement, or perhaps it is..... These things take a beating. My agenda is a wreck within a couple of months and my Clairefontaine A4 linen bound notebooks for my work are also suffering within a month and are stained and covers bent within 3 months. Now if they had elastics, too, well, they are the first things I cut off as they catch on things. Do the people who make these pricey diaries actually use them? I think Daytimer type layouts are for ballpoints/fineliners anyway.

We should post pictures of a typical page of our diaries to show the mess they're in.

The book alone is 3780 yen. Shipping and a cover push the price up a bit though.

Oh my, that's a steep price for it, their page list the full leather bound B5 daily one for 48.5€, which is the priciest one, that managed to configure.

Aldi in Australia recently had some Vior brand notebooks and Diaries which very FP friendly.

The diary is A5 and one page to a day. At AU$10 it was a good price. You might ask your local Aldi (I believe they are in the UK) if they have any available.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
