Thinner Non-Onion Skin Paper

Poetman

Recommended Posts

I have often read about people's affection for onion skin paper, but the only kind I have found is erasable with a rough (perhaps made for typewriter) surface. (Does onion skin refer to thin paper or to erasable typewriter paper?) I am looking for thinner paper, not tracing paper thin, but thinner, like you might see in an old film where the leaves easily flop over--something similar to Moleskine weight or Tomoe River. Can someone specify for which weight or name I should be looking?

Thanks!

That's a good question. I've heard the term, onion skin paper. I wondered if it was a specific brand or type. In that case, I wonder if Tomoe river could be called onion skinned paper. If Amberlea sees your post, she'll be able to shed better light

I use this Onion Skin paper with fountain pen inks. It works well. It has a smooth surface. It's only suitable for single-sided writing as there is obviously ghosting, due to its light weight, but usually there is no bleed-through.

Is this the kind of thing you're looking for?

I also use the same Onion Skin as Migo. Another thin paper is Canson Vellum. It is a little sturdier than OS or TR but has a similar smooth surface and suitable for single-sided writing.

EDIT: TR is 52 gsm... Canson Vellum is 55 gsm... Onion Skin is 35gsm IIRC...Tracing paper varies somewhere in the 40-ish gsm.

In the UK I might point towards Q Connect or Ryman 45gsm "Bank Paper" for your consideration.

+1

I use Q connect and love it for everyday scribbling etc.

Very reminiscent of that cheap toilet paper we used to get at school so don't be expecting to use the stuff for correspondence

So is Onion Skin just one of many brands of thin paper? I recently saw some Eaton's Corrosable typewriter paper at a thrift shop. It was thin also. Is this just another brand?

One of many types of thin papers. If you are after thin paper... look for gsm between 40 and 60.

As I recall, the old onion skin paper had a texture to it.

A LOT of paper companies started copying the old onion skin paper, but without the texture. This was to such a degree that almost any paper that was "thin," was/is called onion skin paper. The tracing paper that I used as a kid was similar to onion skin, but without the texture. There was an "erasable" typing paper that looked like onion skin paper, but wasn't onion skin paper.

One problem with these papers is because it is so thin and translucent, you cannot really use the back side of the page.

Onion skin is a style rather than a brand. It's typically 9lb, considerably lighter than average. (It's not really onion skin, literally, it's just thin enough to remind people of onion skins.) The Paper Mill stuff that someone linked to previously is the only onion skin I've been able to find new anymore, and it has a smooth finish. I also have a stack of vintage onion skin that has a textured finish, a "cockle finish" they called it I think, but I haven't been able to find anyone who makes that any longer. Despite its light weight it tends to be quite strong.

A handwritten blog (mostly)

I purchased a small quantity, if I remember 25 sheets, a few weeks ago from an eBay seller. A search there might be useful.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
