How Many Notebooks Are You Using At One Time?

Like it says in the title, how many notebooks are you using at any given time, and what are you using them for?

I tend to keep two notebooks going at once-- A catch-all personal notebook, and a catch-all work notebook. I like an A5 sized notebook for the personal notebook, and lately that's been Leuchtturm1917. For the work notebook, I like something slightly smaller than A4-- A folded sheet of letter-sized paper should fit comfortably inside, but A4/Letter is just too big. Right now, I'm really enjoying a TWSBI large sized notebook.

Right now, I'm actually keeping three notebooks. The third is a handwriting practice notebook, as I'm trying to improve my penmanship.

I use the Leuchtturm1917 A5 for everything. At the moment 11:

  • University I (Logic)
  • University II (Analysis)
  • University III (Software Engineering)
  • Planer for the month
  • Planer for the week
  • Sketches
  • Quotes I (Religion)
  • Quotes II (everything else)
  • (to-do) lists
  • Work
  • Text ideas

And one in A6 for my handbag.

Well, as for notebooks, as opposed to journals, I usually have at least two going - one for keeping up with conversations, other contacts, reminding myself of what I was doing, what I accomplished at any given time, and to remind myself of what I need to cover at a crew meeting or my next meeting or phone call with any other significant person(s); another one to track research into land titles, usually transcribed into spreadsheets or relational databases later in the day.

My research notebooks the last couple of years are Staples College Ruled Composition books, Brazil manufacture where possible, Viet Nam second choice.

My "brain book" at the moment is a Black n' Red 8-1/4 x 5-1/2 spiral bound.

I think some of the blogs you will find, for example Rhoda drive, really push people to use a plethora of notebooks for every conceivable purpose. But I find it easier just to carry around a $1 composition book and use it for everything.

I keep three - my journal which is med moleskin notebook size, a catchall notebook for jotting reminders, lists quotes I may read (this one is always with me), and my travel notebook with diary, memorable quotes I want to keep and as a travel journal. My son gave me a box full of small moleskin ruled note books which I will be using as my catchall notebook when I fill the current one. I only ever use my lamy 2000 pencil or fountain pen when I write it any of these notebooks.

A No.18 Rhodia pad (and holder, in black) and a No.16 Rhodia pad (and holder, in orange). Use them for everything, which one I take depends on the purpose of the meeting mostly, and anticipated note taking.

itemized contents of each moving box

One rides in my shirt pocket all day, every day for miscellaneous notes.

One Levenger Stanley is used for a commonplace book.

One shirt-pocket size notebook keeps notes during musical engagements.

Two loose leaf 8.5" X 11" binders that hold drafts of works in progress.

One steno pad in my manbag. I never write in it.

There are lots of journals but I don't think of them as notebooks. They are not for notes.

Most of the time, none, except to scribble quick notes in. I always think I should use a bunch, but I end up writing most things on my computer.

And irony is, when I do actually take a notebook on the road, I take a cheap one and I use it with a cheap pen.

No signature. I'm boring that way.

At work i have 3 A5 Red & Blacks usually going (purchased by self).

This one is my Vade mecum https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/295277-kokuyo-sketch-book-notebook/?do=findComment&comment=3431461

Journals at home (2) are Paper for Fountain Pens (the smaller model) & the Nanami Seven Seas, unlined.(depends which room i am in, etc)

Brain storming/mind mapping: Maruman Mnemosyne Inspiration Unruled, in A4 & A5

Sometimes carry around for general use my Midori TN, regular with mostly the #013 insert.

On occasion i still use a "field Notes" size booklet, Specifically the Calepino blank ones.(fit nice in shirt/pants pocket)

For the writing projects, i use mostly composition style notebooks for draft material

Two, one for work and one for personal notes.

For work, I use a Sigel Conceptum A4 notebook - recommended, btw, high quality made, and fountain pen friendly paper.

For my personal notes, I use an inexpensive Black 'n Red hardcover A5 notebook.

3, I think. I've got a cheap small Foray that rides around in a pocket and serves as my auxillary short-term memory.

I've got an Idema graph paper A5 I picked up at a local store and am using for a project,

Then I'm finishing off a leather-like no-name that was a gift that is my "main" journal before I launch into my first Leuchtturm1917 ruled. (Very excited about that!)

Grace & peace,

Chris+

I typically always have 3 'notebooks' going at once, but I also have 2 or 3 extra 'pads' that I use for misc stuff like quickly testing pen inks or quick notes.

Notebooks:

1. Personal Journal - My daily personal journal that I put my personal thoughts and events that occur daily. (Always a Rhodia Webnotebook).

2. Work Journal - All the tasks I assign myself, my employees, and the events that occur each day at work. (At the moment is an Apaca premium CD a5 grid)

3. Book Notes - I read a lot, and I will take notes on the book I am reading at the time. (At the moment that is a Midori MD a5 grid)

Misc Pads / Quick notes:

1. Rhodia No 16 graph.

2. Leuchitturm 1917 whitelines pocket size.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
