It's been a rough few weeks and I needed some IRL cheering up. Fates smiled on me with the arrival of this charming set, a very modest Champion fountain pen and pencil, likely from the late 1930s or just thereafter. This would have been from one of the many 'jobber' companies that assembled from various parts, but this one has decent plating, a nice nib, and better-than-average build.

What catches my eye, and keeps me picking up these 3rd tier gems, is how much the colorway and patterning is like the trends of the moment, kick-started a few years ago by Jonathon Brooks of @carolinapencompany. It's a light-hearted, fun addition to my colorful clown pens, and made me smile.

Definitely worth a few smiles and a chuckle or two.

NICE find.

Thank you all for your kind comments on that silly, colorful set! I lost my oldest mentor and friend 2 weeks ago, and every little bright spot is welcomed, both from humans and writing objects.

Just so you get an idea, I wasn't kidding when I said I had a weakness for these circus-like pens. Here is a photo of what I call "The Clown Pen Tray" with the new members seated at the left. It's getting crowded! 🤡

Well, @JonSzanto, that’s to be expected; have you seen clown cars?  Those are beautiful, each one so different! I love the blue ring top and the black pen with the crazy stripes to its left.

In all seriousness, I am sorry about your friend and mentor. Relationships like that are hard to lose. May their memory be a blessing.

That looks like a perfect perk-upper! I also love the cheery watercolour illustration you chose as a backdrop. It looks like a card . . . from a novel Tarot deck perhaps? 🤡  Sorry to hear of your loss.

That's one impressive colourful tray of pens.

Fountain pens lifting your spirits is something I know from personal experience, too. So it's good you have them in times of need.

Being a bee keeper, I would of course go for that pen in the bottom row that looks like it was made from pure honey. Obviously there are a lot of other beauties as well, but that honey pen drew me in immediately. Beautiful material.

I assume you’ve seen the Retro 51 Buzz pen?

Yes, I know that pen but... no. I have got boots in pretty much that clour and design though. 😁

@JonSzanto the third tier pen set you posted a page earlier is so festive. I love it!  And the tray of pens are so colorful and cheerful.

The loss of your mentor and friend though. That’s very hard. I hope memories of the time you shared bring some comfort.

Wednesday night window shopping and people had been showing their beautiful Sheaffer Crests and… Arrived Saturday. Thursday night seeing what was new at PSP and I’d been thinking I’d like a MK1 Duofold Centennial and… Arrived today. Pics borrowed from PSP listing because light is terrible here right now. I behaved Friday evening. Can’t say the same for Saturday 😉

Wow, @Cjtamu those are some nice looking pens.  Don't hesitate to post more pictures when the time (and light) is right. :)

Currently most used pen: Parker 51 Aerometric <F> -- filled with Waterman Mysterious Blue ink.

A beautiful Canadian Parkette. I've been hankering for one for a long time as I think they look stunning. Saw one on ebay and no one bid against me.

Beautiful! I really hope you love your Duofold. That was my first luxury pen and still one of my favorites 33 years later. The arrow nib is so beautiful. 😍

That's certainly an interesting material that Parkette is made from.

I have a red marble Parkette that I picked up a few years ago.  I don't use it much but it is a pretty pen.  So much so that I spotted a pen with a similar material a while back in a photo for an estate sale, I went to take a look at it and ended up with a Deluxe Challenger (!) and three other pens, all for three bucks apiece....

I also have a black Parkette that I found in an antiques mall a few years ago up in Warren, PA.  It was in a cardboard Esterbrook box.... :o

Absolutely in love with it. For what I do with pens, which is just a lot of writing, it’s perfect. The nib is so soft and smooth, but not to the point that I can’t feel where I am in the stroke. And so elegant. This one is a first quarter 1990 code, IIIQ with #82 F nib. When I decide to pare some pens this one won’t be on the list 😁

And, the final one from last week’s idle hands etc. spree arrived today. These are such gorgeous pens. Shame about the caps but this one is still working.

I bought this Leonardo Momento Magico prototype at the San Francisco International Pen Show this morning.  Now I'm trying to figure out what might be a good, water resistant blue-green ink to go use in it.  Any suggestions?

Beautiful pen. I love the Sailor pigmented inks but can’t think of any I’d call blue-green. Blue for sure, I use Souboku in several pens. Interested to see what others come up with.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
