J. Herbin is known to be the oldest name in ink production in the world, and their inks 'l'Encre de la Tete Noire", "Perle des Encres," (The Jewel of Inks) and "l'Encre des Vaisseaux" (The Ink of Ships) were produced as early as 1700.

M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world.

By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).

J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. These formulas still reside in our company headquarters in Paris.

At the moment company belongs to Exaclair Inc, that has rights to brands like Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Brause or G. Lalo.

Orange Indien is one of my favourite orange inks. It's well behaved, moderately saturated and have excellent flow. I prefer iroshizuku's Yu-Yake but this one is a keeper. During two years I've used 1 and 2/5 bottles. Quite a lot.

I had high hopes for this one but it turned out to be too pale for me. I don't like how under saturated it is. I don't think I've ever got a colour as rich as your writing sample from Orange indien.

Try CIAK paper - it likes most inks and most inks love this paper. On the other hand I like the way it's muted on most papers

This is my experience with Orange indien. The pen lays down a lot of ink when flexed. But still I didn't get a vibrant colour, but a muted orange that seems to lean to brown.

It's a bit too pale for my liking. I'll stick to Yu Yake, my current favorite orange ink.

Have you tried Caran D'Ache Electric Orange? Not a lot of shading once it dries, but it is quite bright. Looking at your list of orange inks I would compare it to the Akkerman Oranje boven.

Nice review; after having used this ink in fine or super fine nibs and finding it rather boring, I rediscovered it with a Lamy Vista with an M nib, looks stunning.
