Thank you Mishka for sending me this sample:)

J. Herbin is known to be the oldest name in ink production in the world, and their inks 'l'Encre de la Tete Noire", "Perle des Encres," (The Jewel of Inks) and "l'Encre des Vaisseaux" (The Ink of Ships) were produced as early as 1700.

M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world.

By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).

J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. These formulas still reside in our company headquarters in Paris.

At the moment company belongs to Exaclair Inc, that has rights to brands like Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Brause or G. Lalo.

J. Herbin offers 30 standard colors:

I know many people find J. Herbin inks too muted and boring but I enjoy most of them. I believe J. Herbin makes amazing and unique ink, however I don't like some of their colors.

Bouquet d'Antan is strange color. It's sort of subtle, vintage pink. I don't like it but I don't hate it :)

This is about the only pink ink I like. Easy on the eyes, and very nostalgic looking.

It's old folks' mauve, like the flowers that old people enjoy, according to Herbin.

I like Herbin's subtle palette but don't really use any - I think because the Herbin colours I prefer work better on more muted, textured paper than the white copy paper that sees most action.

Your writing samples are nice to look at, but I don't think I would get much use out of an ink like this. I am looking for a nice bright pink that screams off the page. Thank you for the review!

B d'A is one of my faves; it has a permanent home in a pink Estie CH with an OM nib.

For retina-searing, screaming pinks I recommend Private Reserve Hot Bubble Gum and Rose Rage and Montblanc Pink.

Looks like it has more mauve tenancies than Sailor Kingdom Note Mycena-pura, but not as dusty.

I like it better than Mycena-pura.

Ink, a drug.

  • 2 weeks later...

I received this ink in a "mystery sample" from Goulet Pens. Pinks are not at all my favorites, but I inked up a Metal Falcon (fine) and a cheap Plumix (1.1 stub). The ink surprised me. It's a very light, but strange, mauve color. Very little shading; again a surprise. Definitely not for me. It seemed to be quite watered down and not as saturated as most inks with which I'm familiar. I love writing with 1.1 italic nibs, my nib of choice as late, but didn't want to swap out any of my nicer pens to try the ink. Again, I filled the Plumix, but it flowed very poorly through the pen. Perhaps its the cheap pen, but other inks have always been well behaved in it. I don't know what it was in the end. Overall, glad to have received the ink and played around with it, though its not one I would ever buy myself.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
