I prefer the Writes Series Montblanc pencils. Most are 0.7 mm but the have made 0.5mm in the past.

My favorite is the Pentel "Kerry". It caps just like a fountain pen. That means you can clip it in your shirt pocket with no lead stains, no holes punched through your pocket, no tip damage. And, because you don't need to ever retract the lead, the lead does not get worn down resulting in poor feeding. Perfect size (not a long skinny stick trying to imitate a wood pencil, which is silly). Good weight & generous diameter. Japanese premium quality. I have not found anything that even comes close.

I love the Rotring 600 but I think Mitsubishi makes the best mechanical pencils. Take a look at the Uni Shift for something more on the level of the 600. The sleeve is fixed but the grip "shifts" down to cover the sleeve so you don't accidently stab yourself.

The Rotring is ok until you drop it! I let mine slip out of my hand and it landed on the tip which got bent rendering the pencil useless. I sent it off for repair and it never returned! I see at Jetpends you can buy replacement tips. They haven't changed the design. Look at Retro 51. It looks like a Rotring and cheaper.

Exactly! However, if you cut the steel tube and give it a proper polish, it will be as good as new.

I'm a big fan of the Rotrings, but prefer the 800 (retractable) and the RapidPro (better balanced) to the 600.

Too many pens; too little writing.

I can also recommend the rotring rapidpro. I recently lost one, and spent a decent amount of time considering other pencils. However, I ended up ordering another one of these anyway as I find them to be pretty much perfect.

Vote for these (no order):

  • Faber-Castell TK-Fine Vario L
  • Lamy 2000
  • Pilot S20

All have found daily use over the years without any problems or concerns

Depends if you want to use it to write or to draw..

Several pencils were mentioned above. Rotring has several options.

But TWSBI has a nice and not too expensive offer. You can choose .5 and .7, and retractable or fixed tip. It is a heavy pencil.

It is too narrow for me for prolonged writing, then I prefer one of the more luxury pens, although the Faber Castell Loom is a very nice pencil for about 18 euros here in my country.

I have a Parker Urban, and I am dissatisfied with the quality.

I like the shape, but the lead-propulsing mechanism feel wobbly.

Tombow Monograph or Uni-Ball Kuru Toga.

I like the rotate business on the or Uni-Ball Kuru Toga but found the Tombow more cozy to write with.

That Tombow Mono is much nicer than a mechanical pencil selling for £1.50 (J-subculture price) has any right to be.

Do you draft or otherwise need a metal guide tube? If so, then Rotring 600. Otherwise the Lamy 2000 pencil is an awesome pencil, with no sharp stabby point to attack your clothes.

If you just want a nice pencil though, Pental P205. They last forever, are lighter then the rotring, and cost next to nothing, so you dont want to cry when your coworker steals it, but still feel like a real working instrument. I used the same one for years and years, and they are the pencil I will reach for, for the rest of my life. They are nice, and feel great, but wont leave you eating instant ramen and beans for a week to own either. Win-win in my book.

The venerable Pental P200 series was the weapon of choice when I was an undergrad. My teacher held one up at the beginning of school and said "just get this one" and so we all did. His was yellow the 209 with the .9mm lead. Comically we all then also got yellow, practically the whole class haha.

Rotring 600. Like mentioned, it is a classic. Hefty, almost bomb proof. Almost. At some point it will drop lead sleeve first and bend it. If the planets are in alignment the sleeve bends only slightly and can be corrected but it will take some time. I would probably try the Rapid pro-range because it has retractable lead sleeve.

Staedtler Mars micro, Faber-castell TK-Fine, before mentioned Pentel P200. Cheaper no thrills, no frills mechanical pens which just work.

Kaweco Supra (titanium B), Al-Sport (steel BB).

Parker: Sonnet (dimonite); Frontier GT; 51 (gray); Vacumatic (amber).

Pelikan: m600 (BB); Rotring ArtPen (1,9mm); Rotring Rive; Cult Pens Mini (the original silver version), Waterman Carene (ultramarine F)

Rotring 600 is on mass drop right now. I'd link to it but I joined the drop and don't want to seem spammy (getting the referral points or whatever).
