Limited Editions - Are Lower Numbers Worth More?

666 is also of interest in some circles. ;) A person's birthdate, 7s, 8s, 4s are desirable to many. 1 is good

I had an MB Patron of Art 888 a while back and the guy that purchased it from Montblanc specifically requested number 666/888. Strange guy......

Got an old Bonhams catalogue in front of me from 2012, it was issued prior to the Wilmore sale in New York on June 11.

Interesting little passage at the start of the catalogue which I have copied as is below :

Ms Elizabeth Carr, manager of the San Franscisco Montblanc boutique, has graciously offered to provide the top buyer in this sale with the rare same privilege accorded by Montblanc to Mr Wilmore : first option to buy the number six example of future releases of Special Limited Editions.

As the number six is often the lowest number commercially available this is indeed a boon to any serious Montblanc aficionado seeking to enhance their collection.

So I ponder who gets a chance to buy numbers one, two, three, four & five

I would think that MB would keep pen #1 for their archives, but that is only a guess.

I'm sure they give away examples to high profile people. I bet Yoko Ono got a low number example of the John Lennon SE and LE pens.

Me. But I always decline. Politely.

No, they are all being sold. The 1 is given to different collectors by choice of Montblanc HQ, there is no-one who has an option on that one. But 2,3,4 and 5 are with long standing collectors - that statement in the catalogue is pure nonsense.

Is it Bonhams that are printing 'nonsense' or Elizabeth Carr that is speaking it ?

Bonhams will take a very dim view of this if they are being lied to in order to big up any auction or item entered.

"4", "44" and "444" are considered harbingers of misfortune in some circles. I'm not kidding.

4 in mandrin is pronounced "shi" which carries the same pronounciation as the word "DIE". Chinese people in general can be quite superstitious and businessmen especially will avoid the number 4 in any business related things, such as shop lot numbers, car plate numbers..etc etc..you get the point.

I suppose its no different than the caucasian population with the superstition with the number 13..

Why are the eight's special ?

8 in mandrin is pronounced "FATT" which also carries the same meaning as the word "PROSPER". Which chinese people love A LOT.

And there are so many LEs. There seems to be no end to the limited editions.

One might venture to say they appear to be unlimited.

Maybe Mrs Carr can promise number 6 as it became available. Don't know who said that "number six is often the lowest number commercially available" - but this is nonsense / sales talk.

I wonder how low the serial numbers go on those websites that offer MB Carnegie and Gandhi LE's for $15.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
