Pelikan Toledo Engravers' Markings

Recommended Posts

I have a Silver Toledo M910 (so-called "old style," dating from 1993-97). I'm curious to know if the serial numbers on the binde mean anything.

My pen has "4E / 86 JB". I'm presuming "JB" are the initials of the engraver of this particular pen, but I can find no information online or in this forum as to what "4E / 86" might indicate.

Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

My M910 dates from the same period as yours. Mine is 1B/09 EI The EI actually looks like a C with a line drawn horizontally from the center of C to meet the I. (The creative mark of the individual maker .

I think only Pelikan and the Spanish silversmiths who (in the past) do the carving work knows what they mean. I think Rick Propas may be the only person in the US that might know what they mean. If he even does!

I've just accepted it as a makers mark/serial number.

Was just reading the pinned Topic about TOLEDO's in the Pelikan Forum. You might want to have a look at it! Some good info.

I'm afraid that I don't have any insight into this issue but I'm interested to see if anyone does have an answer. I also could find nothing via a web search. The last bit is the engraver's personal mark as you surmised. I'm not sure of the more recent situation but I believe that it was a family affair at one point (may still be) of a father and his two sons. The father's mark was a C with a T rotated 90 degrees (sounds like your pen FPFan). I don't know about the son's marks. That's about the extent of my knowledge from past reading.

A Toledo remains my Grail pen and I can only look on with envy and drool....

Sargetalon - Thanks for your insight! It is cool to know my M910 was "carved" by the papa, thanks for that info. I only looked into it as the OP brought it up. An interesting thing I found was that the 2003 OOTT Toledo has no marking aside from the XXXX/1000 from the limited run. No indication of who carved it. That sort of surprised me, but does nothing in my mind to limit the value of the pen to me.

Seems to me those fellows better start training either another generation or get some new apprentices. Wouldn't want to see the Toledo's end before you get your hands on one! Stop with the M2XX's and get that Toledo! LOL Yes, addiction is a problems, isn't it!

I've nothing to contribute, but am interested in this topic as my Toledo has 9AA 36 EH on it.

Thanks, everyone, for your insights. Let's hope others chime in and perhaps lead us toward more definitive answers.

I have one of the older M900s with a 20c nib. The engraver's mark is JR/44 with the C and sideways T (1st pic). I had an M910 that I sold. The engraver's mark on that pen was 5E/96 JB (2nd pic).

So, we have three engraver's initials: CT, JB, and EH. Any others out there? Or are these the only ones, for the father and his two sons?

Can you enlighten me - is the M710 (silver Toledo) still available? And is the Binde still

made in Spain?

Where would be a good place to buy one?

From what I understand, Pelikan makes them all the time, just not very many. I never really cared much for them, until ethernautrix showed me hers, in person, two years ago at the LA Pen Show. They are absolutely stunning little works of art. I proceeded to purchase several from Regina Martini's auctions on the 'bay. Alas, she doesn't seems to auction them of any longer. You could always contact her to see if some are available. Nibs.com sells them as well. They are quite attractive. When I want to carry an understated, but very nice, pen, a Toledo goes into my pocket.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
