Berol Handwriting Fountain

Has anyone seen these before or am I right in thinking they're at least fairly new?

Anyway my point in asking is that i picked one up today for under three pounds and I must say that I am fairly impressed. The nib itself is smooth on the paper, it is light in the hand and generally very easy to write with. I even liked the written results, for an entry level children's pen personally it is one I would readily recommend to others as a general through around, doesn't matter if it gets lost kind of pen... :)

These have been around for a while, but when I last saw one, it was around half that price.

I think you were lucky - the last one I tried required a lot of work on the nib before it could write, let alone nicely.

In my opinion, there are many much nicer pens for children - and some at even better prices than this.

I had one that was smooth and a very reliable starter, but its cap developed cracks before I'd even finished the first cartridge, which was disappointing as I kinda liked the little tomato red thing. To be honest the cap struck me as its weak point right from the first; very, very hard to remove, and so small it seemed designed to be lost. Neither thing in its favour as a pen for small humans, to my mind. Not entirely sure what Berol/Papermate were thinking there. Hopefully your cap will be luckier than mine though.

Cheers, Al

  • 4 weeks later...

I've been using one of these for nine months now, and have found it to be a reliable starter (even when neglegted for weeks), and a more than reasonable writer. :)

The cap however (as has already been mentioned), is the weak point, requiring quite a bit of effort to seperate it from the body. :(

Yup. Got an old Berol Handwriting fountain pen.

It's an older design than the one you show in your pictures - and I think it cost 99p?

(Pictured with Montblanc 146 for size comparison)

Possibly ten years old - maybe even twenty years old?

I've forgotten how old it is, because I've had it so long.

It's actually been (still is) an excellent pen which always writes on demand, despite having been used as a screwdriver/probe/poker/scratcher - anything I needed it to be.

Highly recommended. Get one now!

Enjoy.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
