Monte Rosa 042 Question

Hi there. I recently discovered a Mont Blanc Monte Rosa 042 fountain pen that used to belong to my grandfather. It looks to be in good working order but it is missing the clip and the little screw on tip of the cap that holds the clip.

My question is in regards to the material on the cap trim and clip. The trim on the cap on this pen is silver coloured, not gold. There is a very fine line right along the edge of the trim piece that might be sort of gold but I'm not sure. The nib is also steel but there's some gold coloured discolouration near the pen body. Again, is this wear?

All of the pens that I see on-line as I search for the clip and cap tip have gold trim and clips. Has my pen been used such that gold plating has been worn off of the trim or did they also come in silver/steel?

The nib has "Monte Rosa" engraved on it. The cap has "Monte Rosa" and "Montblanc-Product" engraved. The twist end of the body has "042" with a dot below the 2 and "M" engraved. The main part of the body has "MADE IN GERMANY". All plastic in cap and body is black.

Any help that can be offered will be appreciated. I'm a new member of Fountain Pen Network and this is my first posting. Newbie !!!

Thanks!

David

Hi David,

Welcome to FPN. You'll find many great people here who have lots of knowledge and are willing to help. Glad you decided to join and very happy for you that you found such a wonderful pen and family heirloom. I recently purchased a 42 myself.

I'm not an expert on these but I found this link to a thread that might be helpful to you (note reference to plating): https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/244585-looking-for-a-pen-that-looks-like/

Best,

John

Pictures would help, but from what you are describing looks like you have a Monterosa that once had golden trims and clip and a blue ink window. The cap trims must have worn out almost completely, the same with the nib

Monterosa was the low end line of MB and made for students. Some, I believe, the early ones don't even carry any reference to MB. None has the star symbol in the top, there are 3 o4 4 different Monterosa pens:

The first production one you can find here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/250070-montblanc-monterosa-042-g/

Best regards
Vasco

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
