Sharing My Esterbrook Nib Case

Recommended Posts

I was just looking at this today and wanted to share with everyone here. This Esterbrook nib case is probably one of my favorite fountain pen related purchases. It just appeals to me on so many levels. It's a unique part of Esterbrook and at one point was certainly a part of daily life for many people. It also lets me be organized (or at least pretend to)! I don't actually keep my nibs in it, but all of the old nib boxes do look great in there, don't they. Finally, it has tiny little metal labels for each nib type. For some reason I just love this little feature.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Whoa. That looks like it could have been in a pen shop yesterday.

How cool is that! What's the story of how you acquired it?

It's in pretty darn good shape. The red printing on top has faded quite a bit, but it's still legible. Otherwise, the wood has stood the test of time very well.

Unfortunately, I don't have a good story. I actually picked it up on eBay about 6 years ago. It arrived safely due to a very good packing job. Both drawers were full of nib boxes. Unfortunately, they weren't all still full of nibs, but it did actually come with quite a few. I ended up keeping a bunch of nibs that I wanted, selling the rest and actually made a decent profit on the purchase!

Each of the small dots are marked with a "DC". Not really sure what it could of meant, my guess is that those nibs were Discontinued or were out of stock at the time. I am kind of hesitant to try to remove them in fear of damaging the print. The case still looks good in my office.

Nice finds on those cases.

Congratulations to both of you and thanks for the share.

There is actually a lot of variability in the images on these cases. I probably have three or four of the smaller unit, and probably three or four like MAGGIEMINPIN shows, including one with a giant nib on them. They could be collectible items all in themselves.

Daly's Pen Shop has one of those cases in their shop. Brad(?) was telling me when I stopped there once that when he got it, it was filled with nibs. I've bought a few from him.

I have the same case as the OP (minus the nib boxes and cool metal tags). Unfortunately the nib chart has tears in it, and curls at the tears.

I would be grateful to anyone who could get me a high-res scan (or square-on photo) of the chart. That way i could print a chart and laminate it and my case would look so much better.

Thanks,

Brian

I like stuff like this. Anyone can buy a pen but when you pick up displays like that now your collecting and the current keeper of the item.

Nice nib display...

That is so incredibly awesome!

I love it.

I have an old Esterbrook (circa 19teens-1920's) counter display box for their dip pen nibs.

I love stuff like this!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
