How Can I Find The Size Of Nip?

Oat

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have Montblanc Voltaire fountain pen, how can I find out the size of NIP. If the size doesn't show somewhere on the pen, this is a limited edition with serial number. Can I contact Montblanc with serial number to find out the NIP size?

Best Regards,

Maybe but I do not think they keep records on stuff like that. If you have the original documentation that might show it.

They use a sticker to indicate nip size. Even then nip sizes vary. Best to post a photo and a writing sample with a sense of scale.

It should be on the box or the warranty in the booklet and it will say M, F or B. Montblanc would probably be able to tell you from the serial number, but if you do decide to ask them the question, it is actually called a nib not a nip

That is a No. 6 nib.

Do you mean the size of the nib, or the width of the stroke? The size of the nib is indicated by the last digit of the model number, e.g., 114 or 144 = No. 4 nib; 146 = No. 6 nib; 139 or 149 = No. 9 nib. There are others. Models with popular names are harder to determine without more information.

It would take a few minutes to ask Mb this question. As others have said I doubt they record these details but it might be worth a shot.

My question though is why do you care? If the nib works then great. If it doesn't take it to them and ask for a replacement stating you want a middle or narrower one.

There is such a variation on Montblanc nibs of the same size it's really hard to tell unless you have others to compare it with, this happens when they are made by hand and not a machine.

There are posts in here where F nibs write more like a M, and where an M nib is more on the B side of leaving a line.

It's nice to know for personal reference but the key is being happy with how it writes.

Best of luck on your search.

I finally had a chance to look at my Voltaire and it looks quite similar to my M nib, though maybe a shade wider. That said, there is always some variation in MB nibs, so it's possible that more towards the Fine or Broad end...

HTH!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
