I've just discovered this thread and my mind is blown! Thank you so much, I'll never want for brown ink information again. Have got a few on my list.

Time now for me to take a deep breath, brace myself, and attempt to restore visvamitra's images to this comparison thread.

PLEASE NOTE:
These images date from March of 2015!

I therefore expect that some of these inks may have been reformulated since then, or even discontinued.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE:
Scanning technology has moved-on since 2015.

As such, in light of the above two notes, IF you see any ink on this thread that appeals to you, I urge you to seek out more-recent reviews of it.
Not just to see whether or not its colour has changed since March 2015, but also to try to find out whether its physical properties - flow rate, saturation/shading, propensity to feather/bleed
, propensity for nib-creep, the forming of nib-crud, ease (or difficulty) of cleaning, likelihood of staining pens, clothes, or flesh - are what you want from an ink, or are what you will not put-up with from an ink!

But I am attempting to restore these images because having so many inks of this colour range compared at the same time, by the same person, using the same methodology for them all, constitutes a remarkably comprehensive survey of the colour-range in question - and should at least enable you to form some kind of the idea of any of these inks' appearance relative to any of them with which you are already familiar.

All credit for the images, and for the very great effort undertaken to compile this comparison, is owed to visvamitra.

Enjoy!

Brown is my favourite color. I use it on daily basis.

It took me a lot of time to make this comparison. Well, to be honest, it's still niot ready and there's quite a few mistakes, but I thought that if I won't post it soon, I'll never do that.

So please, excuse me for all the mistakes and uneven number of inks in different categories.
Let's take a look at them.

Summary

I like summaries - they mean I'm done with pasting Imageshack links.
[Me too! Mercian.]

I like most of these sepia toned, brown inks. Well, with a few exceptions (Terre de Feu, Rustic Brown, Francesco Rubinato Sepia, De Atramentis Coffee and Sepia Brown).

The inks I enjoy most are

  1. Lie de The - J. Herbin
  2. Brown - Sailor LE (if you have a bottle and don't use it, let me know, I'll buy it from you)
  3. Hazelnut Brown - Graf von Faber-Castell
  4. Pinie - Octopus
  5. Chocolate - Private Reserve
  6. Walnut - Noodler's
  7. Brooklyn Brown - Noodler's
  8. Cigar - Pen & Message
  9. Ina-Ho - Pilot Iroshizuku
  10. Ancient Copper - Diamine

-----

Well, there you have it folks.

As I said in my first post in this thread, if you find that any of these inks tickles your fancy, please only use these images as a means to try to gauge the appearance of them in relation to the appearance of another of these inks with which you happen to be already familiar!

The images date from March 2015, and not only has scanner technology moved-on since then, but the inks in these images may well have been reformulated, or even discontinued since then.

If you do fancy any of these inks, please do look for more-recent reviews of it/them - and please remember to pay attention to what those reviews can tell you about the physical properties of the ink(s)!

Again, all gratitude for this comparison thread, and these images, is owed to visvamitra.

Slàinte,
M.

Wow.  Thanks for resurrecting the images!  I have a few of these inks but really need to look into some to the others (so my wallet does NOT thank you...).

Afraid to ask:  what has happened to visvamitra?

I wish I knew!

He hasn't posted on to his own blog since March 2019, so not being here since 2022 need not be interpreted as being 'bad' news.

He may just have decided that he has already said every thing that he wanted to say here, or has moved-on to other hobbies.

I hope that, whatever his reason is, it's a happy one.
e.g. that he is too busy to post here because has started a family, or perhaps that he has been elected to the Polish Parliament.

I always enjoyed his posts - especially his ink reviews.  When he stated an opinion, it's like he was speaking for me.

I wish him the best in Parliament.

N.B. I don't know if he has been elected (or has started a family)

Those were both merely wild suggestions of theoretical new occupations that might keep him too busy to post here!

Of course.  It's apparent his talent was recognized and it was decided he was needed elsewhere.  Fountain pens are a very small corner of this world.

Your "inner Luddite"?

Surely you must have meant your 'inner Jedi'.

After all, all of us here on FPN know that the fountain pen is...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
