Collecting Vintage Montblanc Pens

Recommended Posts

Hello there, I have a small collection of vintage Montblancs - collected over the years buying from fellow collectors, and ebay. Are there any established Ebay sellers or online sellers that I can consider buying from?

Also is it just me or are prices escalating very rapidly say in the last 2 years?

I also find it difficult to guage prices. Often, I buy based on my own perception of what is a fair price. I have all the Montblanc vintage collector books - Collectible Stars, Collectible Stars 1, and Montblanc diary. Even, Montblanc in Denmark. Are there any established online sellers who are known to establish "benchmark" prices?

Thanks in advance, and happy collecting.

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell.

There is no benchmark prices these days on fountain pens. You can look at the historic sold prices on eBay or sites like this but they seldom tell the full story. There are some online sellers that are known for having high quality fully functioning products including Montblanc pens but they also charge prices near the top of the range for those pens. Fountain Pen Hospital, GoPens, PenBoard are all ones I have dealt with in the past.

Jar captured the best, highest volume sources. Those are the same ones I would recommend. Otherwise, you can hunt the various eBay sites, including eBay Germany.

I agree with the above. Having just returned from the LA Pen Show with an early 50's Mont Blanc 234½ that I purchased from Osman Sümer, I can recommend him. He is the expert in Germany on Mont Blanc pens and is considered to be fair and honest. He only sells at pen shows and has no web site.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Osman is the best!! Most of my collection has been purchased from him.

You know the groupies that hang with rock bands.....

specialK0449 is an Osman groupie.....never leaves his table at pen shows !!!

B)

Then again...I tend to spend some time at Osman's table myself....

Thank you very much for each of your responses. I have bought at Penboard before. I only browsed at Gopens and Fountain Pen Hospital. Their wares look good.

I am very interested in purchasing from Mr Osman Sümer - he seems very highly rated! Some said he only sell at pen shows. Is it worth dropping him an email to inquire if he prepared to sell online? Does anyone have his contact details?

Thanks again for the very helpful replies. Happy collecting...

Can I ask a stupid tyro question. I have a small fountain pen collection including some vintage Watermans, Parkers, Pelikans, Sheaffers, Pilots and the like. Can you recommend a vintage Montblanc model to look for for a max of $150. Is it worth trying to find one?

All of the above mentioned sellers have pens in good condition for that price. However don't expect Meisterstücks or prewar models at that price. Unless you are a diy yourself, stay away from restoration projects, they could be moneypits.

I can recommend the 12 or 14 (14 is a little longer). If you like thinner pens, they have that sleek 1960s look with a piston.

I asked Herr Dr. Sümer about that myself at the LA Pen Show. He said that he only sells at pen shows.

The MB 14 is an excellent pen, though $150 might take a bit of looking to find one already restored. The 12 is a bit smaller, and should be a little cheaper.

If you are looking for a more traditional look try to find a 342, or its larger sibling, the 344. They were entry level pens, cigar shape, classic spear nib. They came with gold or steel nibs. In proper tune they are excellent pens, still capable of daily use. These were pens made for constant use, not high-fashion models. Penboard had a couple right in your price range.

+1 on Osman. He's a Mensch.

"IMHO, the only advantage of the 149 is increased girth if needed, increased gold if wanted and increased prestige if perceived. I have three, but hardly ever use them. After all, they hold the same amount of ink as a 146."FredRydr, 12 March 2015

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
