No, I am not so satisfied with the j-subculture. In my last order there were two items (a total of ~ 2,5 kg) and two others (a total of ~100 g). Imagine I payed the same amount for each bunch - 929 JPY. I also bought some other stuffs (the package I don't think is heavier than 3kg) and the total for EMS 3,250 JPY, the standard shipping was 100 or 200 yen less, so I chose the fastest way. I wrote to them and they found nothing of the ordinary. In this way adding the custom taxes I have to pay even on the shipping costs (24-33%) I think that all the discount is gone.

Shipping cost is calculated based on weight, not the price you pay. I don't think they can ship by economy (small packet) shipping if the items are over a certain weight. 3250 JPY for 3kg seems about right to me...

I bought my pilot 912 from them for $140 (over eighty dollars less than what goulet sells them for) , it got here in one week, shipping costs were reasonable, and the pen is fabulous. Needless to say I am very happy with j subculture.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. 929 JPY was the shipping fee and not the price, so the same for 2kg and 100g. Anyhow I will wait the parcel to arrive and see what the real weight is.

I don't see the Platinum 3776 Century in Soft fine or I'd be all over that for that price. (esp. if they had the sexy blue)

I've been watching the site for a Platinum 3776 Century in black medium for a while now - it showed up a few days ago and I snagged it for $62 plus about $10 express shipping. So keep watching for that SF in blue - things come and go there!

As for the shipping - since you know the cost of shipping before you make the payment it's your decision whether it is worth making the purchase - they don't hide the cost and if you don't like it you don't have to make the purchase...

I finally got my Pilot Custom 912...Took 2 weeks to deliver and the thing I complained about was that there was no progress recorded on tracking after it left Japan. I was concerned that it was lost and the problems of getting money back etc. They were gracious, but of little help in assuring me that the thing was still moving forward. They seem to be a good company and the prices are good.

Back with an update. Yesterday I went to the post office and a surprise awaited: because of poor handling the parcel was completly wet as dropped in the sea, but luckly the inside packaging was perfectly done so no harm to the content, a plus for j-subcultuere. Now, the bad part - the total weight was only 750g and for this the postage (as appears on the papers) was 2400 JPY, I paid 3250 JPY. In the end I don't know what to feel - the initial price is great but if you add postage (25% in my last order) and custom taxes...

I am really unhappy with J-subculture.

They won't even quote me a price on a pen or tell me whether they can get it unless I 'become a member' on their web-site.

So they have lost my business

I've found that a google search with j-subculture included plus pen name sometimes works, no login needed to see price or stock, all accessible eg

Of course, it may take several iterations or combinations of words to actually bring up the item you are searching for, as their English SEO is pretty poor.

I ordered a pen from them this week, but only found it because another FPNer had linked it in a thread somewhere back in 2010 (or 2012). (Which illustrates just how poor the SEOing is if google hasn't picked it up by now with just a few key words :/)

Noodler's Konrad Acrylics (normal+Da Luz custom flex) ~ Lamy AL-Stars/Vista F/M/1.1 ~ Handmade Barry Roberts Dayacom M ~ Waterman 32 1/2, F semi-flex nib ~ Conklin crescent, EF super-flex ~ Aikin Lambert dip pen EEF super-flex ~ Aikin Lambert dip pen semi-flex M ~ Jinhao X450s ~ Pilot Custom Heritage 912 Posting Nib ~ Sailor 1911 Profit 21k Rhodium F. Favourite inks: Iroshizuku blends, Noodler's CMYK blends.

TIL:) Thanks! I'll probably get some Iroshizuku inks from here.

If only they had Pilot Custom 823s... And a more functional search feature.

Had a great experience with them. Bought a Sailor Pro Gear and a Platinum 3776 Bourgogna for a sweet, sweet price!

Their expedited shipping is amazing! 7 days from placing the order and the pen is in my hands!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I too had a great experience with J-Subculture using expedited shipping. I picked up a Pilot 823 and four bottles of Pilot iroshizuku ink for less than the best price I could find elsewhere for just the 823.

Indeed. Some of their deals are far better than others. This is one of the good ones.

A few others include Pensemble pen cases, the aforementioned iroshizuku inks, Sailor KOP (black resin version), and Sailor Ironwood. Actually, pretty much all of their Sailor prices are incredible deals, but there are a handful mixed in that aren't.

I have, but I greatly appreciate your link nonetheless :)

"I have nixed all Noodler's inks in large part because of their feel, but also their behavior, etc. When I put Iroshizuku or Sailor ink into my pens, it's like the ink, pen, and paper are having a 3-some with smooth 'n sultry 70's jazz playing in the background." ~ Betweenthelines

My third order with j-subculture. This time everything was perfect - no complain, great packaging, reasonable shipping cost and, as usual with EMS, fast delivery. I'm at work and I can't wait to go home and try the Custom 74 B I bought. I think that I'll stick with them for my Japanese purchases. I'm still struggling to find a Platinum 3776 with Music nib on their site but no luck so if someone finds it please share the link.

Wanted to bring this back up. Anyone shopping here still? Looks a bit more difficult than before, but I have purchased several hundred from here, and it was all great!

Where else are people getting good deals?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
