Request To All M600/800/1000 Owners

My M415 tortoise does have such rings.

I could not notice any such rings on my blue M600 under ordinary lighting.

I inspected two M800 tortoises and they have a single ring each. I suspect some bindes are finished off better than others based on the comments.

I believe these thread-like rings may be artifacts of the reaming process mentioned in another reply. My brown tortoise M800 has rings or lines like yours, but lighter in tone, and they can only be seen, along the entire length of the striated tortoise binde, with my 10X loupe. Several of my other Pelikan Souveran instruments have, what appears to be, some kind of dark ringed area where the piston stops, when emptying a pen.

 

BTW, I would never suggest that your interest in this detail--or any detail related to a writing instrument--was some kind of psychological issue or the "real problem." I thinks it's rather rude to even suggest that someone would be 'nit picking' when interested in such a detail. Many members of FPN are interested in the history of their writing instruments which also often includes an interest in small details related to the manufacturing process.

Thank you to everyone who answered and i'm sorry for replying so late.

Those are threads. Take a look at some of the translucent caps in the Cities series, San Francisco, Shanghai, et., and you can see the exact same pattern inside the cap.

 

Original Poster: your first post says that you noticed these rings/threads on both your M800 and M1000, would you mind post pictures of both pens? How did you light the picture that you posted? And, where your pens purchased from an authorized Pelikan dealer?

I don't believe they are threads because I can see the circles closing. I now believe they are some kind of "friction fit" aid.

The M1000s (2 of them) that displayed this issue were both returned and I do not have any photographs taken of them. One was bought from an authorized dealer in The Netherlands and the other from Amazon.de. The second pen Amazon sent me was perfectly "clean" and I kept it.

The light that best reveals the markings is almost parallel (very sharp angle) with the barrel coming from the piston end.

 

If you look at the video here at 2:56, you can see them reaming the inside of the binde. My guess is that the "threads" you see are just some spurious marks left by the reaming tool.

I tend to agree. The reason I think they are sometimes visible and sometimes not is because of the solution caught in them.

I think the dark ring you are referring to is the step in the internal radius of the barrel. The section where the piston slides up and down is narrower than the section which holds the brass cylinder. I've notices this very clearly when disassembling the pen.
