Oh, I'm going to have to look at my Angel Fish again.  I didn't think it was dry. I love the color.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

It may be the pen more than the ink.  I'll have to try it out in a different one and check the flow.

@amberleadavisYou once sent me a CRV with Angelfish and I don't recall you saying anything about it being dry.  Seemed like a lovely and vibrant ink.

I loaded it up now. It is not as wet the other Sailor ink, but it is not bothering me.

I hate dry inks so much that I would absolutely have mentioned it!

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread and especially to @amberleadavis for starting it.

I have dedicated an inexpensive FP, a Retro 51 Corsair ($72), to using Baystate Blue. So far, I have had no issues with Baystate Blue. But I don’t want to risk putting Baystate Blue in a more expensive pen. This thread has given me some suggestions as I am looking for an ink that is similar in color to Baystate Blue but hopefully safe with putting in any pen.

Diamine Sargasso Sea and Diamine Bilberry are both super saturated and great for mixing.

I read a review that said Sargasso Sea had an unpleasant odor. Has anyone else had that experience?

When I get to my studio I will smell it and let you know. I will also check my swatch book for a better behaved alternative to BSB.

Well, it couldn't have been my ink review that you read or are referring to, since I didn't produce one for Diamine Sargasso Sea; but I'm the one who would often mention in online forums that my bottle smelled so strongly of toxic blue-green algae that it made me feel physically ill, and when that smell managed to infuse one of my Moonman 800 pen's grip section material that no amount of treatment I tried in desperation could eliminate it, I ended up having to toss the pen out.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

The search for a Baystate Blue doppleganger has always been a difficult one.  There have been several discussion threads on just this topic, so it's worth doing a search to read them for suggestions.  But the short answer is that there is no other ink that shares Baystate Blue's unique vibrancy; it's in a class by itself.

@ErrantSmudge I have read through this thread and several others. I realize I won't find a doppelgänger. But hopefully a great blue to try in a more expensive pen.

@boilermaker1975, my Sargasso Sea smells phenolic. Some people like that smell, and others find it unpleasant. It smells like school to me. A similar color to BSB, but it doesn’t have as much of that glow (I don’t know how else to describe it) is Monteverde Emotions Collection Confidence Blue.

Thanks @Penguincollector, looking at hundreds of blues this past weekend, Sargasso Sea is one of the few that caught my attention. I don't mind the phenolic smell. So I will probably try it.

Searching, I had missed Confidence Blue, so I will look at it.

Have the Monteverde inks been well-behaved for you? No pen problems?

TIA

Sargasso Sea is gorgeous. I came across it when looking for a replacement for Penman Sapphire, which is as elusive as BSB to find a replacement for. I’m sure you can find it sold in a sample size if you’re worried about the smell.

Monteverde inks have been very well behaved for me. I don’t put them in a lever filler, but everything else is fair game. Horizon blue and Ocean Noir are favorites. They tend to be pretty wet inks, so I mostly use them with dry pens.

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
