Noodler Bay State Blue Or?

Lux Blue is a little chalky and Dromgoole's Blue Steel is a little green... but both are water proof (DBS has a green wash).

I bought a bottle a couple of years ago.

Be carefull with this ink,

It was simply imposible to flow in any pen. It was, even, very difficult to clean the pens in which i tried the ink,

Better try Levenger Cobalt Blue,

I have not tried it, because they don't ship to Mexico, but looks nice in the samples published here in FPN,

Julio MX

Cobalt has never been water proof for me, and it fades. Even worse, it's a dry ink for me.

So... I use Upper Ganges when I want fairly wet and water proof. It's still chalky, but it's a lot less expensive than Luxury Blue.

I don't think there's much that can match the in your face vibrancy of BSB. It is a truly unique ink.

It is also as waterproof as they come.

So many inks, so little time...

BSB is certainly in your face vibrant. I put my sample of it in a Pilot Varsity and it flows incredibly well with the wick feed.

Funny you mention the smell - it doesn't bother me, but it's definitely a strong smell. Another post in the "Frequent Topics" forum just wanted inks that smell that way. (And led to me opening and smelling Pilot Blue, Pilot Blue-Black, and my bottle of Phenol.)

That smell is Phenol. It's a biocide and helps prevent SITB, and a lot of inks used to use it for that. A lot of the vintage inks smell this way, apparently. (I have none.)

Out of all the inks I own only Pilot's inks as a strong smell. (Not Iro, the regular inks.) I can smell the ink coming off the page. I've used Platinum inks and you need to sniff hard to smell that.

Phenol = good. Though, sadly, it was not enough to protect my Diamine Registrar's Ink.

Not sure what all the fuss is about with the Blue that Shall Not be Named. There are lots of other, more user-friendly bright blues out there. They may not be "waterproof", but they work a whole lot better with pens. And, they don't leave you, your pens, and your work area looking like you spent hours vivisecting Smurfs.

Smurf vivisecting may be unlawful in your state.

I'm not sure if that's a state I would want to live in or a state I wouldn't want to live in.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but I just refilled a pen with it - Goulet's Noodler's exlusive, Liberty's Elysium, is pretty bright and relatively waterproof/bulletproof/shockproof/dustproof/etc.

Some of the Noodler's inks come with a pen and you are instructed to only use that pen, because they will damage things sooner or later.

I think these warnings were made tongue-in-cheek as a jab at subset of FPN'ers who are excessively worried about the "safety" of inks. Reference of that is made here:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/162506-noodlers-kung-te-cheng/?p=2132012

I heard it myself in the referenced chat, but finding that reference requires more effort than I'm willing to make on the matter. Now in actual fact, some inks do seem to yield halting flow in some pens if they are not diluted a bit, KTC among them. BSB is a bit prone to feathering if it is not diluted a little.

Having said all that, BSB, among others, is one of those that I insist on choosing the pen carefully for. I'd really like to use it in one of my Pilot Celemos, but since BSB has allegedly melted one Pilot translucent feed, I don't feel like testing that with my pens. Also, once it has dried, it is water resistant to a point that it is extremely difficult to eradicate from a pen, more so than any other ink I have dealt with, including Sailor's nano pigmented inks. Isopropyl alcohol is a good solvent for BSB, so I restrict its use to modern pens that can stand up to alcohol if need be.

I know my id is "mhosea", but you can call me Mike. It's an old Unix thing.

See this thread.

Personally, I love, love, love BSB!!!! I do clean my pens when done using, but I don't worry about using it in vintage pens and I think the bad rap it gets is more the exception, not the rule!!

So, what's your point?

Asa Gao is a great blue. When placed next to BSB, it has a more grey tint to it while the BSB has a vivid color with almost a hint of purple to it. I have a photo of the two side by side, but my camera phone is nothing to speak of.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
