Weight Of The Faber-Castell Basic

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few comments about how the Faber-Castell Basic is very heavy. However, I checked out the specs of the pen (I'm interested in the Carbon version but others had similar stats) on gouletpens, and its weight was 28 grams. This is only a couple grams heavier than the Pilot Metropolitan, which isn't light but isn't that heavy at all. Was the information there wrong, or what?

Each version of the Basic has different weight. They have about 4 different finishes. In my opinion, the "weight problem" of the Basic is that the pen is horrible to use posted (it is very long) and people claim it has a lot of weight on its back, so the nib feels unbalanced.

Both the Carbon Fiber and Leather version didn't seem all that heavy to me, not nearly as bad as some of the Jinhao offerings for sure. I currently own the Leather version, previously had the carbon fiber.

If you hit up Goulet Pens and hit "product Details" you'll see all the specs such as weight, size, diameter, etc.

Carbon Fiber:

Overall: 28g (0.99oz)

Body: 22g (0.78oz)

Cap: 6g (0.21oz)

Leather:

Overall: 27g (0.95oz)

Body: 21g (0.74oz)

Cap: 6g (0.21oz)

Matte Chrome:

Overall: 34g (1.2oz)

Body: 28g (0.99oz)

Cap: 6g (0.21oz)

Polished Metal:

Overall: 36g (1.27oz)

Body: 30g (1.06oz)

Cap: 6g (0.21oz)

A Jinhao 159:

Overall: 50g (1.76oz)

Body: 31g (1.1oz)

Cap: 19g (0.67oz)

Lamy Safari:

Overall:17g (0.6oz)

Body:10g (0.35oz)

Cap:7g (0.25oz)

Pilot Metropolitan:

Overall:26g (0.92oz)

Body:17g (0.60oz)

Cap:9g (0.32oz)

They used to have one more, a Mother-of-Pearl finish in "Precious Resin", but it's no longer made.

The balance is my main complaint of the BASIC, the nib is Great, Very smooth, very well controlled, the pen's body itself feels a bit unbalanced, and it's not comfortable to post. Also the clip sticks out further than it needs to.

The very large grip portion is just solid plastic with a soft feel to it, so most of the weight is on the barrel. I originally thought it was a rubber wrapped around the section, but after the section cracked in half on my month old carbon fiber BASIC it was clear it was one piece of plastic (The carbon fiber one I had was also supposedly one of the defective batches of smaller diameter barrels, which may have caused stress on the threads).

I had a polished metal one. Maybe my scale was off.

I got about 40g on mine and seemingly 39.9 of that was in the ass of the pen (okay that part was hyperbole) but I did weight it and it was more than 2 Safari.

For the record SEB's video gives the weight of the pen and that more lined up with what I had than what Goulet has.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
