How Do You Protect Your Pens?

So I bought a Waterman Hemisphere in black lacquer and its due to arrive sometime mid-week. My understanding is that you need to be careful with this finish as it can get damaged easier than others. That's fine, but I'd like some kind of case or pouch for the pen if possible. I'd really love a thin leather "sleeve" for it with a flap that closes to fully encase the pen. For it to be a snug fit, that'd probably have to be custom made job. That might or might not be feasible, but I'm open to suggestions. What other options do I have that are "off the shelf"?

 

For of those of you that I see talking about carrying several pens (or more!) with you daily, how do you guys protect them? Are they close at hand in a interior pocket of your jacket? In the breast pocket of your shirt? In a small case that you carry in your work bag/purse/backpack/briefcase? And if any of you could be bothered to show some pics of your carrying cases and let me know where I could find them online, I would greatly appreaciate it.

I also highly recommend their penvelope and 20/40 pen cases for storing more pens. I have both types and have been very pleased with the quality. For the quality, I feel the price is justified.

I have and use several faux-felt sleeves in an eyeglass case. A remnant of cloth will do, as well.

Expensive, designer cases are available at the optician. My come from the dollar store. .

They protect well the pens and accepte to be mistreated. They smell quite strong at the beginning but it disapears after one week, give it or take it.

The single penvelope (haha, my spell check hated that word) looks perfect--and in real leather? What's not to like. Can't seem to find dimensions for my pen online anywhere. It's the Waterman Hemisphere in rollerball, anyone have this same pen and a ruler? Lol.

That's awesome; I'm using a cheapy (and given to me free when I bought my sunglasses) felt lined hard clamshell to carry my Cross around right now. I just put it in my backpack. It rattles around terribly, lol. No damage to the pen though.

 

My Parker Jotter is worn on my shirt at all times so I have something instantly accessible.

I use one of these for single pens, I also have a Rocye 2 pen case and the Montverde 36 pen case for when the pen is not in use and safe at home.

I have a velvet sleeve that came with a Kaigelu pen that I use sometimes with a 78G, but that is not a pen I would mind scuffing a bit because it won't be able to keep its own pristine condition. I also bought 2 natural tanned leather case for 3 thin/regular pens each from Netherlands (eBay), that can fit 3 78Gs perfectly, but they don't have individual slots, they are very compact. My new Custom 74 doesn't fit very well in these, and I wanted a special case for it, so I looked a lot of my options. I found great cases that were very expensive, around $40-$50 for a single pen case, so I decided to get a Aston leather sleeve from Goulet Pens, which is reasonably priced. It was also my way to celebrate this company because they carry a lot of useful information, I always watch Brian videos and use their color palettes to compare inks and help me decide which ones to get, but since I don't live in the US, I am used to import from Asia and not them (cheaper shipping rates or pen prices, and I also prefer Asian pens). I could get cheaper Chinese ones that weren't good looking, but since I am talking about a $90 pen, it is probably going to make the pen happy. Can't wait.

I have a dozen cases that i store the pens in and probably 30 or so travel cases made of leather or fabric. There are a lot of great cases out there as previously mentioned, but you might want to look at the Pen Boot that is being sold on Fountain Pen Geeks. it is $17 and really nice. I have gotten them of them and they come in colors.

I THINK I still have some old motorcycle pants that are full leather and I've sold my motorcycle with no plans for another ANY time soon. I might just get out the sewing machine and cut me some leather to make my own case like this one.

LOL, the smell? Is it real leather or some sort of imitation?

I use the Aston leather pen slips. They are soft and the extended flaps both protect and make it easy to grab the top of the pen. For a really large(ie. fat) pen, I use the Franklin-Christoph pen sleeve, it holds my girthy Danitrio Hyotan just fine. Be aware that if a sleeve is a tight fit and your pen has a slip cap, you might have some trouble until the sleeve conforms to your pen.

 

For carrying multiple pens I use the Pelikan 3-pen case (personalized by Fahrney's), or the Franklin-Christoph 3-pen case for longer, larger pens. For these cases, you need to match the length of the pen to the case. Putting a shorter pen like a Pelikan M600 into the FC case can make it difficult to get back out.

 

For pen storage, I use an Aston 20-pen case.

Pelikan cases have little hinged divider flaps between the slots but no other liner than the cushioned leather. And the FC cases have no liner but each slot has an inner loop of fairly rigid material that you can use to clip the pen on to prevent pen to pen contact.

Baric, thank you for both of your posts. Lots of good information there. I can't wait to go digging for those old leather motorcycle pants. If I don't have them anymore though, I think I'll order the FC single penvelope...uh, assuming I can find dimensions for my pen online somewhere, lol. Otherwise I'll have to wait until I get it to measure it myself...

I was going to say with a Springfield Armory XD4 9mm, but I'll settle for saying that I carry my pens in on ordinary plastic pocket protector. I don't have any really expensive pens, so this is good enuf.

I think I've found dimensions for the pen I ordered too and its surprisingly slimmer than I thought. The Aston case would most certainly be too long, as it would swallow the pen up (I see conflicting numbers, but it APPEARS to be 5.4 inches long and the Aston case is 6.5 inches long) and possibly too loose too, as the average of dimensions I've found for the pen come out to about .40 of an inch, while the case is 1.5 inches wide.

 

Hmmm...custom made is looking like it could be a better fit AND more fun!

The Aston would work fine, as will the medium FC Single Pen Sleeve. Remember the sleeve dimensions are for it flat, when filled the dimensions shrink. As far as length, you just squeeze the bottom of the sleeve and out comes the pen. Longer is better so you protect the top end of the pen.

Well, I *think* the FC will be the better fit of the two. But I honestly think I'll wait to buy it. I really want to try to make my own leather sleeve. I'll mimic the design of the FC in a way, but I think I'll try to do something a little different with the opening at the top. The main thing I like about it is the single stitched side and one piece of leather design, as opposed to the Aston's. I'm going to feel so stupid if I threw those pants out! I thought for a long time that I could use the leather for something, but never had any ideas until now...
