What Do You Do When Paper Is Too Crappy For A Fp

No paper is crappy when you use Iron Gall ink. But paper that has no life in it gets either tossed or given away. No need to suffer.

Soldier on! Waste not! Of course you then find that the reason why a pen stops writing is because the feed is full of fibres from cheap paper...

I bought a Mead notebook at a drug store, across the street from a tire store while I was waiting for an emissions test. The paper is terrible, which makes it suitable for testing. My Pelikan XF feathers and drags. My Sheaffer Imperial 330 XF and Parker Sonnet do not feather, but they drag somewhat. The Parker is usable, but not fun. However, a Jetstream .7mm ballpoint works beautifully.

Fortunately, I'm not forced to use any paper than what I buy personally. If I make my own mistake, it would find a home with a colleague or student at the university where I work.

When I'm out and about and needing to write on something given to me (e.g., meeting handouts or receipts), if it's truly awful I'll use one of the ballpoints or gel pens I always have on me. (My pen fetish is a long one. I have drawers of pens hoarded.)

Toss it out and get better paper! Actually sometimes with dry ink and fine nibs you can write on about anything. I fill out newspaper crosswords every day with my fountain pens.

Newspaper, really? What ink do you use or recommend that behaves decently on such thin paper?

If an ink performs at least decently on newspaper, it'll likely be sufficient to use on any paper

my school has quiz booklets that seem to have like 50 gsm recycled paper... guess what happens when that meets an FP... YES XF doesnt cut it... I may have to get a Pilot PO ot a Platinum XXF just for it

Pilot penmanship has to be among the finest out there. Don't worry though, just switch out the nib with a metropolitan or prera ;)

I like Pilot V5 precise rollerballs for when I'm not using a fountain pen. I keep one in my bag and have a bunch in different colors. They write on a lot of paper that doesn't lend itself well to my fountain pens. If the paper is too bad even for that...I don't know, it's probably tissue paper.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
