Do You Find It Embarrassing Using A Childish Looking Pen In A Grown Up Scenario?

The Pelikan twist has been on my radar for a while as I like to buy odd strange looking pens occasionally. But the one thing that is stopping me is that I probably would look a bit silly using one in lectures. Am I being overly self consciousness and should I just go for it?

Any experiences on the subject do you use childish looking pen happily at Uni, work etc

Go for it! It is a really good writer. I have two and use them a lot.

Always lurking, sometimes posting.

For what it is worth, I bought 6 Twist while visiting the Pelikan outlet store at their HQ and they are great little pens for the price!

I am using the red one with, you guessed it, red ink at work for corrections etc and they only comment I got so far was "cool pen". I don't carry it about like the 580 and Vac700, but mainly because of ink color.

Two things: The grip section may not be for everybody as it is designed for the standard 3 finger tripod grip that is taught in German schools. So even the 4 finger "tripod" may be awkward for longer periods. On the other hand, if you do not like a particular official color combination of body and section, you can get 2 different models and mix and match bodies and sections.

Nobody in my lectures would notice, let alone care. The amount of contorted faces for the sake of snapchat, even In jam packed lectures, is the most remarkable thing.

I wouldn't. I like also stylus for my iPad and the last one I bought is a colorful set of two for children and I use them anywhere. They are small, sturdy and quite pleasing to use. No problem. I would do the same with pens.

Hell! That's not "childish" looking! It's modern art! Anyone who says different is an uncultured fool. Besides, if it writes nicely and you grin or feel good when you look down, why should you care? If someone judges you based on your pen (unless you are applying for a job you really want/need) do you really want to deal with them? So, yah, you're being overly self conscious :D .

My daughter has a Pelikan that is a true child's pen as it is covered with the alphabet in bold superhero-esque colors. It is a great writer, and I have carried it and used it on occasion. If you knew what I looked like, you'd probably laugh. Which is fine. If you asked me how it wrote? We'd be friends. I think that is a very cool looking pen, and I might get one except the section looks like a Lamy Safari, which does not work for me. I like the idea that you can change out the sections. Might get one for my daughter who is entering middle school.

Some people say they march to a different drummer. Me? I hear bagpipes.

Hi,

Any FP has greater élan than a biro - go for it.

For example, if I were to treat the non-nudist Pink Safari to a 'conference room' meeting, I'd wear my Hanna Montana bangles instead of 22K gold trinkets - by choosing your accessories well, a person can pull-off pretty much any ensemble.

I guess it depends. If the course is something like economics, which enforces a code of silence to prevent everyone from laughing at the lecture, then a brightly-coloured pen might be an issue. Otherwise I shouldn't think anyone would think less of you, and you might attract the curiosity of some potential converts.

I think you should go for it. I've seen a phrase used here- "the most conservative of settings."

I feel, outside of such (like say, a funeral or a wedding)... Do what pleases you. If it pleases you to wear sushi socks (*coughcoughasIamrightnow*) or use an adorable pen (that Twist is going on my Want list RIGHT NOW)? Go for it.

I have blue hair, a couple piercings, and wear Vibram toe shoes because I hate wearing sock/shoe combos. I regularly attend local networking events, have had a few job interviews. Whatever you do? Own it. :D

I wouldn't use one of these, but not because of its looks (hey, at the moment I have a bright blue/teal Parker Vector in rotation...; and people sneer at *those* as being "school pens"). The problem I would have with a Twist would be the same issue that I have with Lamy Safaris -- I hate the grip. I found the triangular grip on Safaris to be amazingly uncomfortable for me, and suspect that I'd have the same trouble with the grip on the Twist.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have many bright-colored (and some "childish looking") pens. I also attend many meetings and presentations each week (approx. 30-40/ week.) The vast majority of the time, I use whatever I am carrying, which is usually one of 3-5 pen in my pocket. Omas Arlecchino; orange Omas Tokyo, Aurora Sole,)

In relatively few cases where I am a passive participant, and think my pens my draw focus away from the presenter/ main participants, I do tend to use more staid pen (black vac senior max, grey PFMII, black Leboeuf.)

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Do you have a Mac, sunglasses and a weird hat or shawl as well?

If so combine all and hipsterize :P

Nahh, college kids are a forgiving lot, you'll be fine with that pen. You're not being judged as much as you think you are in most situations.

Another voice urging you to just go for it.

+1 to MBFan's observation that few are likely to even notice.

+1 to AndrewC's comment about modern art...

Personally, I have a purple and yellow Online 'best writer' model, with a very nice 1.1mm stub nib on it, and a red heart on the cap. I have no problem using it (nearly) anywhere, and have yet to hear strange comments or catch mirthful looks.

not much in the corporate world ideally... but hey who am I to judge your taste in pens

The only people I wear loafers for are potential employers ;)

Although in those situations I'd go the full nine yards and grab the crappiest biro I can find.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
