Please Help Me Find A Pen With Wide Grip

I am looking to buy a Fountain Pen with large grip. I am working to loosen my grip and have found that large grip helps with this. Ideally the grip width would be about 11 to 12 mm at about 35 mm height. I do not have any preference over new or vintage pens but i prefer pens with smooth and stiff nibs of Asian F size.

The only large pens i have are Jinhao 159 which is nice although slightly heavy. And Noodlers Ahab which has weird curve on it's grip and is too light. Also i would like a pen that does not need so much tinkering as i am relatively new to fountain pens.

I would mostly like to hear suggestions of postable, acrylic, ebonite or celluloid pens between USD 5 – 125 but all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I do not have preference about the filling mechanism so eyedropper would be fine. Ranga model #4 and Decca Advocate seem interesting but i would need to get one with custom Western EF / Asian F nib. I do like Pilot steel nibs but huge pen with tiny Pilot #5 nib from 78g might be a bit silly..

Sailor Pro Gear seems nice but i'd like something less expensive.

Gama model Supreme, Kuyil Hawk or raja available for asapens.in should be suitable with the stock fine nib. The stock fine nib is quite fine.

Parker pens have large grips (e.g frontier) and they're quite cheap. Pelikan future looks like it has a big grip, as does the Platignum classic. Faber-Castell loom looks like it has a large grip too. I don't have any measurements, but I'm sure if you look them up you'll find one to suit your needs. Again, all are relatively inexpensive, although they tend to only come with a medium size nib.

Hope this helps. Good luck :)

Jinhao x750? Lighter than the 159, but a tad smaller.

I have Jinhao X750 and X450. I like the X750 otherwise a lot but the metal band the cap attaches don't really feel that nice in my hand.. And the grip is a bit small. I'd measure it closer to 10 mm than 11 mm.

Thank you! Many fine pens there. Especially Gama Kuyil caught my eye.

Could you please advise is "Indian Fine" nib closer in comparison to "Western Fine" than "Asian Fine"?

Since there can be some variability in line widths of nibs of same grade, I suggest that you discuss with the owner of asapens, if they are able to hand pick the finest nib for you. An Indian fine in my estimation is approximately about a western EF.

Faber Castell Loom looks certainly very nice, could not find exact measurement for grip but if the barrel diameter is 12 mm it shoud be at least 11 mm.

Faber Castell e-motion might be nice also.

I'd recommend this: http://www.peytonstreetpens.com/sheaffer/legacy/sheaffer-legacy-1-palladium-gt-cap-black-body-touchdown-fine-excellent.html

The Legacy has a pleasingly wide section diameter and it's a comfortable pen to write with. That one has a fine nib, which according to the nibs.com chart is only .05 mm wider than a Pilot fine. You could probably get a nibmeister to grind it to an ef and still be within your budget ceiling. You're also getting a niffty filling system along with the ability to use cartridges.

I fully recommended Peyton Street Pens -- I've bought several pens from Teri, including a Legacy. No affiliation -- just a happy customer.

The Ranga Model 5 is a pretty large pen, sells for $90.00 ( in US Dollars in the USA). It might cost less if you order it online from Indian pen stores.

There are many good suggestions, thank you!

Laban Mento would technically be in the price range but it is not available in EF, ofcourse i could swab the nib.. Have to think about Legacy seriously later.

The Faber Castell Loom is quite inexpensive and barely tapers at all between the barrel and the nib, so the grip section is nearly as large in diameter as the barrel itself. It's also postable though it has a metal barrel and a Faber Castell fine nib isn't going to be as fine a nib as a Japanese fine point. I quite like mine.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Just ordered two large ED pens from Asapens – superb customer service.

And i am seriously thinking about getting a Loom also :-)

I've been looking at the Pelikan Th.ink for days when my knuckles are sore: http://www.pelikan.com/pulse/Pulsar/en_US.Store.displayStore.159618./th.ink

The only downside is they only come with one nib size.

It seems that you can get the Th.ink in multiple nib sizes from Germany, also from some German ebay sellers. Sadly not in EF.
