Caran D'ache Dunas

I was surprised to see that there isn't a review of the Dunas on here.

This was an "accidental" buy, that soon turned out to be a favorite. I bough it a couple of weeks ago in January.

So I went to buy ink and they have this glass cabinet at the register where the sale items are presented, the Dunas caught my eye and I immediately tried several to see which color would be best. Though first I was put off because they only had a M nibs and I prefer F nibs. So I decided to sleep over it, but it wrote so nicely that I couldn't get it out of my head and I went back and bought it. Didn't regret it.

Note: It was on sale, because it is going out of production.

Appearence & Design: 9/10

- hexagonal shape in the middle that becomes round towards the ends

- looks like the design will age well

- hexagonal shape prevents the pen from rolling from the desk

Construction & Quality: 5/10

- light

- plastic

- cap can't be really posted, unless you apply pressure, otherwise it's loose (I don't mind, since I never post my pens.)

Weight & Dimensions: 7/10

- 13,5 cm lenght

- 1 cm width in the middle

- weighs 19 g with ink

- good size for people with small hands

I prefer heavier pens, but otoh it's perfect for my hand size.

Nib & Preformance: 10/10

- The nib is smooooooooooth, glides over paper like butter. :notworthy1: Compared to this one, all my other pens suddenly feel scratchy.

- The size is M and it was the only size available. (I asked if the nib could be changed, but was told that no, it can't be. Now, I don't know if this is true or if it is just the policy of that store, because of warranty issues. I bought my Hemisphere there, too and they wouldn't exchange the nib either, telling me that the nib is fastened to the feed with clamps and can't be taken out, which is obviously BS, but I got a virginal pen from the factory, so I didn't mind.)

- Not dry, starts immediately. Either medium or wet.

- Stiff nib.

Filling System & Maintance: 8/10

- uses international cartriges/converters

- haven't disassembled, so can't tell anything about that, but assume that it's possible

Cost & Value: 10/10

- bought at KaDeWe

- for 39 € on sale (were previously 69 €)

- would pay a lot more just for the nib preformance alone

Conclusion: 9/10

Surpassed my expectations and is a daily writer. 1 point minus because of its lightness.

The other Dunas' I tried felt the same way when I was writing with them and I found a review by sbrebrown who also noticed how nice the nib was, so I assume my nib is not a freak of nature.

Well done with the review and nice find!

I enjoy my Leman as the only CdA I have, and this would've been a nice pen too if it would post and was heavier. Your description seems to be similar to Stephen's about the Dunas so that's very helpful.

The nib in the Dunas is the same as found in the Ecridor. Have 2 Dunas, 2 Ecridors and 4 leMans. Excellent nib, the fine is smooth, flow excellent. The Dunas series is a very under represented pen.

I own one made in carbon fiber. I would give mine a 7/10 in construction and quality, and even more if you take into account that it has CdA's lifetime warranty.

Thanks!

Congratulations on the great price and the good nib; and thanks for the review!

That's good to know.

While overall I really like this pen, I think the light plastic and the basically non-postable cap deserve minus-points, so I ended up with the middle.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
