Pen Loops For Midori Style Notebooks

I think I may try the clip attachment route.

I have a Leuchtterm loop arriving, so I can see if that works

John, I tried the Leuchtturm pen loop with my TWSBI Mini and I am afraid to say that it does not fit. Well - to be accurate, the piston knob will fit, but not the barrel. I'm afraid that Leuchtturm pen loop is not much use for the thicker pens. A Parker 51 will fit - this probably represents the upper limit in size that will work.

I don't know if its really a pen loop solution for a MTN, but this is what i did. I wanted a Midori style cover with a pen loop, but i wanted it for 3.5 x 5.5 size notebooks. I used saddle leather so its much thicker and stiffer.post-110569-0-25793400-1392645647_thumb.jpg

I use the Filofax flex penloop for my A5 Leuchtturm notebook. You don´t attach it to the notebook but stick it in at the end of the book, as the loop is attached to a A5 sized thick sheet of paper. It´s big enoug for a TWSBI 580.

I made a simple pen loop for my Modena notebook from 1 inch black elastic.

I formed a loop and glued it back to itself, then glued the tab to the book. As extra insurance I glued another layer of heavy card over the glued tab.

Edited to add - Since you are making the loop yourself, you can make it as big or as small as you need.

If you haven't found a solution that works for you yet, what about an "insert" with one longer end rolled or shaped around to fit a pen, or with some kind of loop you can hang a pen on? You can try making one out of something stiff & thin like plastic or even a tough cloth.

If you don't want to attach something permanent to your notebook, or want the option of having different size loops, maybe affixing it to the cover of one of your inserts as some kind of wraparound could be worth a try.

Ever since I saw a custom-made leather insert in the Midori Flikr pool, I've been wondering about what a pen-carrying insert (2-4 pen loops or pockets on one side, a folder or open pocket on the other) would look like, although I imagine this would greatly reduce the number of notebook inserts you could have.

Well , I never thought there would be as many options !

I am tending towards the 1"elastic band , attached to thick card.

That will mean that I can have exactly the right size.

Keep the ideas coming , they are brilliant.

The OP said that he is worried about the size of the Leuchtturm loop, and I agree. I have several and they are only suitable for skinny pens. Small diameter and very little 'give'. I doubt his TWSBI will fit.

The loops are also available for less than £3.50 e.g £2.25 at Bureau Direct

I only use the Leuchtturm pen loops for thin pens like the Parker Jotter BP. I left a white Jotter in a black loop for months and it got a little bit of discoloration from the loop that I didn't manage to clean. When I have used it with slightly thicker pens there has come glue on them. The loop don't fit the average fountain pen. It's too narrow.

I like that the loops come in several colours to match the note books.

This is a good idea and it works very well for me. I have made a stiff sandwich-style insert for the Traveler and I attach the pen loop to that. A real bonus is that the pen is somewhat protected because it's carried inside the notebook.

Lately I've been using plain 1" elastic for the loop itself, because I can adjust the snugness to match the pen I want to carrry. The infinite flexibility of this solution is what appeals. I can adjust the loop to match the pen.

There's an instructable on easy, quick-to-make pen loops using just a strip of paper and some clear packing tape. I haven't made it yet, but from what I can tell (and I have some experience with papercrafts) it would be both easy and quick to make. I like this idea because it doesn't add clutter or bulk, and because the pen loop is removable.

I think if your pen is too thick for the midori pen loop, you are actually supposed to get the smaller loop (the one that looks like it could only fit one of those super-skinny pencils you can find on some vintage pocket diaries) and then use that by hooking your pen's clip onto it. I don't know, that might have the pen flopping around a bit getting in the way, it's probably not as neat as a pen loop that goes around your pen and sits snugly close to the notebook, but it could be an option. And it should also work with any combination of pen and loop, so if you would prefer the colorful leuchtturm loops but the size wasn't working for you, this could be a way to use them.

I'm not affiliated with ANY of the brands/retailers/shops/ebay sellers/whatever I mention or recommend. If that ever changes, I will let you know :)

Looking for a cheap Pilot VP/Capless - willing to put up with lots of cosmetic damage.

I make those pen loops out of card stock and packing tape on my moleskine like notebooks (you know the kind with the pocket in the back). Not sure how it would work on a midori though. They work great!!!

I came up with a new idea about how to attach the pen.

In the center of my regular sized MTN, I have a leather zipper pouch that I use for id cards, credit cards, etc. They fit in there in such a way (slid towards the spine) that there is enough room for the TWSBI mini to rest on top of the cards and still fit inside the zipper pouch. So, the pen is on the edge of the MTN and thus doesn't increase the size of the MTN, and there is enough room that there is no danger of the metal zipper marring the pen either as I open and close the pouch.

This method both protects the pen and keeps it at my fingertips, and it is technically inside the MTN too which I find pleasing.

I wonder if this would also work with the clear plastic zip pouches?

How are people making out with their pen loops/holders? Is the Leuchtturm the best option? Can Midori's own loop be securely fastened to something other than the cover? Have any better alternatives come out for fountain pens since this thread was last active?

instead of pen loop, I had fabric / quilted single pen sleeve that I just had it there and the bungee cord keeping it close to the journal , what I a talking is open end ( without a flip cover or sort ) full length sleeve ,I had several from one that fits very slim to very very fat pens and choose accordingly with the pen on hand. This ensure I had the pen when I need it whether its actually writing on the said journal / notebook or needing to write somewhere.

Was it just stuck under the bungee cord/elastic, or was it somehow attached to the elastic, too? Did it put unnecessary weight or pressure on the elastic causing it to stretch or break or anything like that?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
