Pen Loops For Midori Style Notebooks

English John

Recommended Posts

Can anyone suggest ways to attach a pen to a Midori style notebook?

The Leuchtturm pen loop looks like it will only fit a thin pen, and I don't know if it will attach properly

I just wondered what choices I have , to say, attach a TWSBI/Lamy to a notebook

Please let me know

Thanks

John

The problem is the diameter of the pens you want to fit in the holder. This is the Midori clip made for the notebooks but the largest size only takes up to 13mm dia pens

Alternatively one of the Quivers may fit http://www.thepaperie.co.uk/brands/quiver/quiver-single-pen-holders

I'm sure there are more options out there though.

Hi John

Here is my idea it is not quite finished as yet but I think you will get the idea,

I have remade a passport style cover with longer sides I am going to sew a slot on the side to hold a pen

the picture below is my original sample which was glued together to see if it could be done

I have also considered making one with a wrap around cover and stud fastener I am also working on a full size version

I am looking forward to seeing what others have done

you could always go for a Leuchtturm Pen Loop which is just stick on e.g. from amazon for £3.50. Here is the brown one but they come in a variety of colors.

The OP said that he is worried about the size of the Leuchtturm loop, and I agree. I have several and they are only suitable for skinny pens. Small diameter and very little 'give'. I doubt his TWSBI will fit.

The loops are also available for less than £3.50 e.g £2.25 at Bureau Direct

I have been puzzling with the same question for a few weeks. I have one of the Midori clones off ebay UK. The Midori clips actually cost more than the notebook and seem to be hard to find in the UK. Certainly I have not been able to find one in brown.

In the end I went for one of the Leuchtturm ones and it is on the way from Bureau Direct. I gather that the loops will work with pens up to 11mm, so this 'might' just work with my Kaweco Al Sport. It's cheap enough to take a chance on and it was a good excuse to order a couple more Rhodia notebooks in order to get free postage!

I'll let you know how it works out.

I have to say that the X17 ones look absolutely identical to those from Leuchtturm.

@Shuggy: Absolutely not the same as the Leuchtturm pen holder. Look at the pictures and the video on their website. Will be available Feburary/March.

I was about to suggest something like http://mymoleskine.moleskine.com/community/2013/01/diy-attachable-pen-holder-1.php which I use for my moleskine, but I realized there's a horizontal tie around a Midori notebook.

Might work, anyways?

Some people have talked about pen case-like inserts, and there is always the option of making your own pen holder.

It is not the prettiest holder, but Muji sells stainless steel pen holders. The loops is made of soft metal elastic coil that will stretch to fit any pen.

The only things are that you have to clip the holder at the top because of the design, and while I didn't see any scratches on my pens from using these, you may have misgivings about metal holding your pens.

I recently bought this and will attempt to fiddle around with it. Will try out different ways of slinging it around inserts, the Midori itself, etc.

No idea if it'll work, but my past experiences with Korean brands have been good, like the pen loop in notebook covers (A6 sized) from Himori/Iconic etc. I managed to fit TSWBI minis into this type of faux PU leather from many Korean brands. I personally don't like the Quiver style at all, looks a bit to chunky for me. I noticed that the Korean brands all photograph to have things to appear very slim etc, but I always found they can take a good beating. I managed to squeeze a small Apica notebook and a TWISBI mini in some of these brands.

It all fails, I'll still have a two sided pen sleeve that will fit on Webbies etc, and I'm personally a big friend of these 50ies colors to begin with.

No affiliation, just someone waiting for this case to arrive in my mailbox.

Can anyone suggest ways to attach a pen to a Midori style notebook?

I have made a mattboard insert for the Traveler and I attach the pen loop to that. The pen is somewhat protected because it's carried (sort of) inside the notebook. Not hanging on the cover.

Lately I've been using plain 1" elastic for the loop itself, because I can adjust the snugness to match the pen I want to carrry.

Detail of the mattboard insert is here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/96705515@N03/8928596047/

Ah - I see! As well as the existing elastic pen loops, they are going to sell a sort of bulldog clip with a slot for a pen? It looks OK; looking forward to seeing some more details.

Well the Leuchtturm pen loop arrived and it works perfectly on the Midori clone with my Al Sport. However it would be too snug for a wider pen barrel.

Thanks for the pic.The pen loop looks just right for the Al Sport. I have ordered one to see how it will work. I have an OHTO Tasche which will definitely fit. I still hanker after a TWSBI mini though

I have also bought 2 Midori Clones - the one above for my daughter, and an A6 size from Chris Davis Leatherworks on Esty for me. So today it is a father and daughter day, making notebooks, diary inserts, Kraft folders , and finding beads for decoration etc.

Hi John

I have been thinking about this since your original post (not all of the time but you get the idea) I hope that you will post pictures of your solutions.

Anyway I have come up with a solution as I make protective cases for pens with kydex I wanted to incorporate that so .........

You will need a little imagination

The wooden dowel represents the pen and kydex enclosed in leather

I have enclosed a midori style notebook to give an idea of size

This would still use the elastic style closure and take the standard size inserts.

I have a few Midori TNs, and I wasn't happy with the pen holding options, given the multiple different pens I use (I was worried about either scratching the pen if too tight, or dropping the pen if too loose). My solution (which has been successful) has been to use the Midori *small* pen loop, and put the CLIP through that. The band around the notebook then holds the rest of the pen flush with the TN.

Works for me!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
