Best Lamy Pen

True, the only thing the Studio has going for it over the Safari is that it isn't as loud a pen. All else aside, I'd still say that I prefer the Safari.

Cheers!

@Kaweco (Thomas): Thank you for inspiring photos

@ Lyander0012: Hope, you'll get a Persona soon, for it's not only a stylish pen though quite ancient, but also it works at all times without any problems.

Many years ago, I bought Persona and Lady in France with 18-carat-nibs.

Persona, Lady and 2000 are the most reliable pens in my pen collection and Lamy service (in germany) is great

(no affiliation, only made demand to change M-nibs in F and EF, pens itself did'nt need any service so far).

Asfaras I know, Safari, Al-star, Studio (steel nib version) and a couple of other models all come with the same nibs.

That's correct. I have a couple of Al-Stars with italic nibs (the 0.9 and 1.1), and they're very well behaved; my only issue with both Al-Stars and Safaris is that grip, which I find pretty uncomfortable.

OP, what was your issue with the nibs on your pens? You say they weren't "decent" - in what way? Flow, scratchiness, or something else? And what size were they?

One thing to keep in mind is that Lamy only makes three (or four depending on how you count it) types of nibs not taking into account widths and not including vintage or past models, only their current lines.

The Lamy 2000 line uses a tiny 14k platinum plated nib that is only offerered on the 2000 model.

All other Lamy pens use one or more of three versions of their standard interchangeable nib design: stainless steel, black coated stainless steel, or 14k two-tone gold. Although certain pen models come standard with certain versions of these nibs, they are all interchangeable across Lamy's lines.

So, the writing experience comes down to quality control during nib manufacturing (in my opinion, the biggest factor), the width of the nib, and the design of the particular pen model (weight, section design, materials, etc.). I do find that the 14k two-tone nibs tend to be better out of the box than the two stainless nib types. I have also found that the larger percentage of my stainless nibs, both regular and black, have needed some minor tweaking to really get the flow and smoothness right, but I haven't run into any that were so bad I've had to return them.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Lamy 27 yet. Granted you are maybe looking for modern Lamy pens. I have had many Lamy 27s though and the nibs are consistently good.

I also have Lamy 2000s and am waiting on a Lamy Persona. I'm excited to see if how the Persona writes, the nib as shown above is different than the normal Lamy lineup.
