Removing Dried Ink From A Section & Nib

Sinistral1

Recommended Posts

If you have the nib off, blowing air thru will come out the top of the feed, the ink channel could still be blocked. You need to look at the ink channel with a loupe to see if there is dry ink in the ink channel. Or just use an eye dropper to drop ink cleaner onto the top of the feed, and let it work its magic on the ink in the ink channel.

The ink reservoir also needs to be cleaned.

If your pen had fins on the feed that is the reservoir. In the same way, drop ink cleaner onto the feeds and let it soak in between the feeds to disolve the ink in there.

As this saga continues, my question is now that I can, should I continue trying to get the feed out or not?

I don't know your pen, so I don't know the construction of the feed.

You might want to continue to see if you can get the feed out, but I'll take a partial access to the feed over none.

Blowing thru shows you that the back of ink channel is at least partially clear.

You now have access to the ink channel on the top of the feed, so go clean those. Toothbrush and your pen cleaner. You will have to leave the pen cleaner on the feed to soak and disolve the old ink.

gud luk

This is all good advice, and I won't be able to add anything more to it. The toothbrush cleaning and soak/patience is all you can do if you don't have a ultrasonic cleaner.

Another sigh. I sure am going to have the cleanest pen ever when all this is finished!

Update..... one 12 hour soaking and a glass of very inky water..... blew easily through with ink sputtering..... so, I ran warm water through it for about 15 minutes and then shook it dry as much as possible, dried with a towel and when it appeared to be free of the water, I inserted into the barrel with a new ink cartridge and tried it out...... long seconds ticking slowly by.... finally ... a flow of ink....

it actually works.... although not very well..several strokes and it starts to skip. Have it stored tip down (with the cap on) in the hopes that the new ink will finish the job of dissolving the old....If it doesn't clear up in a few days, I will go back to the soaking method, since that seems to work.......

thanks to all for the help.....

Update:

I posted another thread about this pen in the Waterman forum, but in case you didn't see it, after taking this pen to my local repairer, he discovered that the nipple was very badly damaged and the feed holder was basically full of what he called cement. So, somehow, magically, between being a fully functioning pen in England and it's arrival to me, the nipple was damaged and the ink in the pen turned to stone!

He replaced the feed and feed holder and I'm going to retrieve the Gent this evening. All's well that ends well.

Yes, my Gent nibs include two extra fines, two fines and two mediums. Compared to my vintage Watermans both the fine and mediums tend to write wide. I have a heavy hand, which is one of my writing traits I am trying to change. Too many years using a medium black Skillcraft ballpoint!

I just ordered a NOS black section with a broad oblique nib from Battersea Pens in England. I should be able to create outdoor signage with it, if I use a wet ink!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
