I would love an answer to this as well-- there's the same on a No Nonsense Old Timer which I've got. I assume it has something to do with the plating, but it's not present on a plated point in a NN Vintage.

It is early days yet for a post, but I feel two ways about this.

1. Happy to find an obscure question.

2. Expecting the vast knowledge of FPN to be able to answer any question.

Can anyone explain this mark on the nib of a Sheaffer TRZ?attachicon.gifTRZ.jpg

That mark is a hallmark. It attests to the purity of the gold plating on the nib. It's not usually found on Sheaffer nibs made in the USA and intended to be sold in the USA. But nibs made in the USA and intended for sale in Europe or in the British Commonwealth would normally be hallmarked.

 

In my Sheaffer Targa collection I have a total of 161 nibs. There are:

129 14K nibs (22 hallmarked)

6 18K (all hallmarked)

6 23K gold electroplated steel nibs (all hallmarked)

20 unplated steel nibs (none hallmarked)

Not all of the hallmarks are the same. Here are an assortment of hallmark photos that I just took. They're quick and dirty, I didn't bother to dust the pens and it shows. Hallmarks are used for precious metals, originally just silver but then expanded to gold, platinum and others. They are a form of certification mark that the purity indicated, such as 14K, has been assayed and found to be at least as high as marked.

 

Don't ask me why the last two photos show multiple hallmarks on the same item. I don't have a clue why that was done.

The PF has been discussed in the context of their appearance on the older Pelikan nibs as well. It is supposedly a Swiss customs mark.

They look like a hallmark and a makers mark.

I don't have the facts right at hand, but that eagle head on the second one is something to do with France's gold content laws; something in the line of an official government agency agrees with the indicated content (but I welcome correction). I've got it on one of my Parker 75 points, and have seen it in connection with Watermans as well.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
