Diamine Inks With "bulletproof" Properties

Recommended Posts

I am a fan of Diamine inks. I think they have a wonderful color range and are a very good value for the money. However, I was wondering which of their inks would be considered "bulletproof"? I already have a bottle of their Registrars Ink, but I am looking for other colors which are fade and water proof.

Thanks, Joe

I don't think they make any claims on light fastness, and you already have the only waterproof ink they make.

Apart from the Registrar's already mentioned, there is nothing else with any 'claimed' water or other liquid resistance. However, checking some of the forums and posts, you will find references and examples of some interesting properties of some of their inks. For example, their Prussian Blue; Presidential Blue; Sapphire Blue and Washable Blue have good water-resistance - on paper!

Yes... I believe somebody posted a thread about soak tests with these Diamine inks. ;)

"Bulletproof" is Nathan Tardiff's term for inks made with cellulose-reactive dyes.

"Invincible" is the term Private Reserve uses for their equivalent inks.

I don't know of any other cellulose-reactive dye inks, except, possibly Mont Blanc's new permanent inks.

A few dye inks are waterproof, such as Pilot's Black, Blue-Black and Blue inks, but not any of their other coloured inks.

The only other waterproof, permanent, hard-to-remove inks are the iron-gall inks (like Diamine's Registrar's) and the pigmented inks (Sailor Kiwaguro and Seiboku, Platinum's Pigmented Blue and Black).

The I-G's aren't particularly fade resistant, which I was shocked it. Some stuff I wrote with Salix in April of 2013, and which sat mostly in a dark evidence vault for ~5 months with at most a few days of sunlight/light exposure, had completely lost the blue component and was just left with the light grey I-G component.

MB-MB (I-G) would lose a blue component to water, as would Salix. I can't remember if I tested Diamine Registrar's Ink or not.

My experience with Diamine inks has been that they flee before water. Sargasso Sea does leave color behind when exposed to water. Wild Strawbery, Poppy Red, Sherwood Green ... forget about it. Of the Diamine Ink's I've water tested, I can't think of a single one that doesn't have one or more components run when exposed to water.

On the plus side, Diamine offers a stupidly large number of colors, on the minus side, their inks make Iroshizuku inks look waterproof.

I can't think of a Diamine permanent ink, but Registrar's. I would try other brand better to find different colors that aren't black or blue-black. By the way, I've read about two:

- Platinum Sepia permanent ink, but it's very light colour. Has anyone tested it?

- Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa, with a stormy purple-gray color. Same question, has anyone tried it?

Well, the easiest way to find some of the fade proof qualities is to look at the wonderful mini test performed by Cybaea .

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).
