Learning Italic

Jade, I've used Eager's book for the last few months. Only recently acquired Waters' book. She has some slightly different ways of teaching italic ... you'll see the difference.

I started learning Italic as well.

Here is one of the first things I wrote.

I am using a Pilot Parallel 2.4mm calligraphy pen.

Unfortunately, I have not yet learned capitals. Sorry they are missing in this written piece.

Thanks!

That is an excellent start GJMekenkamp. Which instructions are you following?

- Salman

I am using Fred Eagers instructions :)

Disclaimer:

I'm not a calligrapher, I'm just passing advices given to me, that seem appropriate to sample above.

My italic hand is far from ideal and requires a lot of practice. If You want to imitate, than look into samples by Ken Fraser.

Feel free to give me hints on improvement to my italics.

Wow, thanks for taking time to give me advice! I really appreciate that! I am definitely going to pay attention to the flaws in my handwriting you pointed out.

Yeah, it is quite difficult to keep the pen at the right angle, I am trying to keep in at 45 degrees, but somehow I cannot keep it there 100% of the time.

If you're using Fred Eager's book, then there is no single page with whole model. Consider printing out the folowing pages:

Lesson 10: Review of number of strokes (page 28).

Common Faults and Remedies I (page 39).

Consider printing also:

Common Faults and Remedies II (page 66)

Summary of Standards for Italic Handwriting (page 67)

As to nib angle... it takes time. My guideline generator, can add nib angle guidelines.

I have been trying to pay more attention to nib angle.

Furthermore: I indeed printed those papers and have them next to me.

What do you think of this?

(yeah, I now it is still far from perfect)

Oh, this paper originally was posted in the 'Handwritten posts only'. Thought I could use some more practice :)

Lyrics from a song I just heard. I didn't like it particularly.

I'm still working on my "q".

Pen: Pilot Pluminix B.

Ink: Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Brown.

This comes from a song I've heard recently:

Machine Gun Kelly ft. X Ambassadors & Bebe Rexha - Home.

Pen: no name Chinese piston filler with Lamy 1.5mm stub nib. I love this nib to bits.

Ink: J. Herbin 1670 Rouge Hematite.

Paper: Pigna notebook.

Paper: Probably Pigna.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
