Traveling With Ink -- Do You?

Recommended Posts

When taking a trip do you carry ink along? If so, what is your travel ink strategy?

I do. I will normally travel with my purse pen (Parker Sonnet M) and a backup fountain pen that can vary with the trip and I carry one bottle of ink. I prefer bottle to cartridges and for security I keep the bottle in its box if there is one. If not I wrap it in a paper towel and, in both cases, seal the ink in a baggie. this method would go for any mode of travel. When traveling I do opt for a smaller bottle like a MB special edition bottle but it may contain a regular-line ink.

Just curious as to how others here manage their ink needs when traveling with a fountain pen.

I take my Optima Mini and M320 because they are small enough for any T-shirt or shirt pocket. Plus 1-2 15-ml Nalgene bottöes (filled with any inks).

It depends on the ink. Most of the time I take a 147 with Royal Blue cartridges, but when I have something inked with a non-cartridge colour, or in an integrated filler pen, I'll generally take 3ml in a sample vial. Very rarely 15ml in a Nalgene bottle, in a baggy, in another baggy. I do not want to find out how much damage 15ml of Noodlers Prime of the Commons can do to the contents of a man bag.

When on a longer trip when I know I'll have time to "play," I'll take several 5ml vials and perhaps some 15ml Nalgene containers with me, too. Perfectly-sized for the baggy of liquids in my carry-on bag. (I've never had a problem at security.)

I usually take one fountain pen and a couple of dip pens because they are easy clean-up.

Even though there may be credible evidence that it's ok for fly with inked pens, I never do. Had a bad experience. Don't want to talk about it. :yikes:

I take a small Nalgene bottle (15mL) of whatever ink I'm using at the time with me wherever I go. I figure 15mL is more than enough for even weeks of writing since I'm not a super heavy writer. The Nalgene bottle is perfect because it's pretty crushproof (more so than sample vials) and doesn't leak. Plus its lighter in weight than a glass ink bottle.

Cartridges all the way for me. Long carts of Waterman South Seas Blue for by the seaside postcards and Herbin's Violet Pensee for any poems that happen along the way. Also a spare, trusty G2, just in case.

I have sample vials from the Goulet's that I will take along if I anticipate the need for extra ink. I tried to buy a nice case to hold 4 of them from Etsy but that deal fell through when the seller could not complete the sale so I just put them in a ziplock bag and carry them that way.

just any pen I like to have with me, there are no pens dedicated for travelling.

so it can happen that it's a c/c filler, which makes it easy if I'm on meth carts right now. If I'm on converter or if it's a piston/lever/... filler I just take one of those lovely Goulet's sample vials. Never failed me so far.

Greetings,

Michael

Yeah the Nalgene bottles are the best, I've used them for years for distilling various liquids such as soap and shampoo for going cycle touring. They're kind of pricey for what they are, but they are 100% reliable and they last.

Whatever pen happens to strike my needs and mood.

Visconti Traveling Ink Pot--no extra Ziploc baggies or paper towels. It's proven itself as 100% reliable for me. I bought it to use at home to full fill-up with a Pilot Vacuum Piston pen.

The traveling ink pot is a beautiful accoutrement. Funny story though: I was in a store to check it out and while trying to work the mechanism it shot out of my hand and flew across the store. That led me to believe it would be a danger in my hands. :D Edited by Joane

I take a bottle of Diamoine Sapphire...my all-around favorite ink, and a solid bottle. Carry it in my briefcase. Never had a problem and never ran out of ink.

I like the idea of a few ink vials in a plastic soap box or metal mint tin.

Something fairly stout to protect the ink vials during transit.

AS we normally go by car, I wedge a small plastic carrier bag with the two or three normal bottle of ink that I'm using in the pens I want to take with me, into an available space in the boot. No problems. Maybe I'll take fewer bottles someday.

I often take bottled ink with me when I travel, so far no problems. I wrap the bottles in paper towel, and put them in a Ziplock baggie. Seems to work for me. I like those Nalgene bottles, though. May have to source some of those.

I'm travelling at the moment, and there are two 30ml bottles of Diamine ink in my washbag. (Grey and China Blue, if you're wondering!)

Thank you. In fact I was wondering.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
