Making A Pen Case

Michael, I am too dense - I do not understand the thong toggle function of your mystery wood piece (I did guess the pen rest correctly though, so all is not lost).

Please explain.

Sorry Mhguda

I was trying to be clever and add a little interest but as usual I am too keen to get on you are right it is indeed a pen rest.

This picture may help my poor explanation.

There is a Japanese company famous for their pens who make very expensive cases and I am trying to make my own version, If you look closely at the picture above you can see the line where the kydex ends near the bottom of the pen tube, At the time I made this case I was unable to form the kydex into the round end.

As I have learned more about the product that makes my cases so strong I am now able to do this although it involves heating the plastic to very high temperatures I wont be sharing any more details,

So the leather thong joins the top and bottom pieces together and sides down the thong to secure them when closed.

The kydex cylinder is the full length of the pen so there is no need for any kydex in the lid. I am not sure wether I prefer the thong to be secured at the end

I am making this case for myself to hold my latest Japanese Danitrio pen which I will share picture of when its new home is ready

Thanks

Michael

Thanks Michael, it's clear now, your explanation very good. I look forward to seeing the finished case, with pen rest, in action.

BTW the red rounded case is very handsome! I do see the line where the kydex tube ends and being such a perfectionist I know you see it and it bothers you, but it's subtle enough and it adds a little interest. It would not bother me in the least.

I'm glad you're also making one of those beautiful pen cases for yourself. The one you gave me is wonderful. I am using it for my Deccan Author.

I have been a little busy with other thing so I am not as far on with this project as I had hoped I was up bright and early this morning and made some progress

This picture shows the case closed.

Each of these sections are suede and leather reinforced with Kydex there is a second band of Kydex around the front to prevent the leather from taking the shape of the pen tubes over time.

I still need to sort out the edges trimming and sealing them and sew around the edge of the lid.

The pens are a tight fit in this case so I am still considering some sort of method of assisting in their removal or preventing smaller pens from being lost inside.

Thanks for looking

I decided to put a second hole in the lid to allow larger pens to be accommodated

I vote gold. That combination would be reminiscent of sea and sun.

What colours and colour combinations does your friend like? It usually is seen in the choice of clothes. That could be a help.

Personally I would chose red.

Sun and sea I really like the sound of that.

Tanzanite very good idea but actually we have never met but their favourite colours are red and green but my wife says red and green should never be seen together.

it is a lot easier to make one to order when someone else makes the choices.

Mine is going to be mahogany with a black suede interior.

Thanks for the help

Artists put red and green in the same painting because they make each other pop out. They are opposite from each other in the colour circle and are called complementary colours. The other colour pairs are yellow - violet and blue - orange.

I think it will look great with any of your three colours :)

I think I'd choose either the gold or the white. Any chance you take a picture with a thread of each color laid over the top of the case so we can see what it looks like? (it would only need to be one picture) Love the purple and aqua/turquoise case too - the purple leather is so unusual.

And whatever color combination you end up choosing, the case will be beautiful, given your attention to detail and your care with all of the work. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the finished case!

Thanks! White if they're more conservative, gold if otherwise. It'll be gorgeous whatever color you use I'm sure!

The purple leather is unusual in more than one way it is actually sheep skin leather and is very soft to the touch, it is also very thin and quite fragile for leather as the embossing is deep and in some places goes all of the way through.

I make a lot of notebook covers with it where it is glued and sewn to a heavier leather for decoration like this

I also have red but the purple is by far the most popular.

The four pen case is a custom order however the three pen case may appear in the classifieds when I get it finished.

Thanks

I visited my leather supplier yesterday to purchase a hide and some other goodies whilst there I had a look through the scrap bin and spotted a nice piece of veg tan with black suede stuck to it I added it to my bag to practice carving on, when I got home I was looking at it and thought I could make a pen case from that.

So here is the starting point I rolled the wet leather around a piece of dowel it is too thick to form around the end of the dowel so I made a round plug for the end

Unfortunately I had under estimated the amount of thread required and ran out half way up rather than joining the thread I cut it all out and started again.

Thanks

Michael

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
