How To Date A Montblanc?

Recommended Posts

My first Montlanc, a 144 has arrived from Italy this week. It has both w.-Germany and serial number FB127102 on the clip ring. But since I read from former posts that pens before reunification in the 1980's are marked with w.-Germany, and later with Germany on it. And serial number introduced in1991 which indicates that the pen is date from 1991 to present. Also, it has a bi-color nib, I saw former nibs are mono-color. And the converter of the pen is just plug in, which indicate this is a earlier montblanc also.

Again attached pics are from the ebay seller, I have only blackberry with me, and I do not think I could do much better than he did.

With Best Regards.

First off, have you had the MB boutique authenticate the pen as genuine? The 144s were easily copied so you want to make sure yours is legitimate (not that I see anything wrong with it offhand).

FWIW, it's pretty hard to date the 144s, unlike the 146/149. Yours might have been sent into MB service at some point and had the cap/clip replaced, which would explain the discrepancies you noted.

Hi Zhe,

The pictures are showing an original MB 144, sure from the transitional period 80´s to 90´s, no problem.

kind regards

Thanks all for your reply, is anyone can tell me more about the story about W.-Germany and serial number present together, I think this is quite weird but interesting, and can help a lot for dating this pen.
